No-bama 2012: Young voters fed up with economy

'Millennials have concluded government intervention is the problem, not the solution'

One group tracking this turnaround is Generation Opportunity, or GO, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that seeks to mobilize Americans aged 18-29 toward “real solutions” to joblessness and the flailing economy.

GO boasted this past week that its family of Facebook pages – with names like “We Like Small Government” and “Gas Prices Are too D— High” – have topped over 4 million “likes” and growing, fueled by a young demographic that polls show is increasingly disillusioned with Obama’s economic policies.

“Every day, young Americans search for meaningful, full-time jobs in a career of their choice and, instead, experience first-hand the stark reality imposed by the poor economy,” states Paul. T. Conway, president of GO and a former chief of staff of the U.S. Department of Labor. “Rather than resorting to pessimism, however, young adults are taking a harder look at who and what is creating barriers to economic opportunity.

“Increasingly, they identify elected officials and policies that result in more government interference,” Conway continues. “As they continue to deal with the highest sustained unemployment since World War II, Millennials have definitely concluded that government intervention in the economy is the problem, not the solution.”

If Conway is right, it puts “Millenials” – 66 percent of whom voted for Obama in the last presidential election – at stark odds with economic solutions the president has touted thus far.

From the stimulus bill passed early in his presidency to proposed job bills and even the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, Obama has repeatedly demonstrated a belief in increased government involvement in the private sector, while at the same time calling for increased taxes on the investors and business owners many Millenials are hoping will hire them.

Conway told WND that message isn’t connecting.

“Whether you’re a Republican, Democrat or independent, at the end of the day, your aspirations, career, dreams, ability the live the life you envision are all tied to full-time work,” Conway said. “When you have politicians who vilify those who have the means and courage to create business, and you have so many looking for jobs … when we’re out in the field talking to people about solutions instead, we get immediate interest.”

“I’ll tell you about an amazing poll,” Conway told WND. “A July 22 poll of 1,000 voters from the Service Employees International Union, or SEIU [which spent $28 million backing Obama in the 2008 election], asked 18-29 years olds whether they would vote for Obama or Romney. Though 66 percent voted for Obama in 2008, only 49 percent answered Obama in 2012, with 41 percent for Romney and undecideds at 10 percent.

“When asked about the president’s job performance, 37 percent approved, 57 percent disapproved,” Conway continued. “When asked if the country was heading in the right direction, 22 percent said yes; 75 percent said America is on the wrong track.

“As a veteran of over 100 campaigns, when you have a swing vote of 10 percent in a demographic and that demographic is saying at 75 percent that the country is on the wrong track – when you’ve got a candidate formerly at 66 percent support now below 50 percent – you have a major problem as a candidate,” Conway concluded.

“The core issue,” Conway told WND, “is that people cannot find economic opportunity, cannot find meaningful, full-time jobs in the field of their choice, and they’re being asked to settle for the status quo instead: part-time work, not in their field, at below their skill level for their education. People are not going to settle for that.”

GO has been tracking the impact of the slumping economy on 18-29-year-olds and has released a series of reports showing how the demographic has not only suffered disproportionately under the economic conditions, but has also turned against the president’s plans for more and more government solutions to the problem.

According to GO’s reports:
  • While the national unemployment rate has hovered around 8 percent, the non-seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for 18-29-year-olds is 12.7 percent
  • If the additional 1.715 million young adults that are not counted as “unemployed” because they have given up looking for work were factored in, the actual unemployment rate for 18-29-year-olds would rise to 16.7 percent.
  • Only 31 percent of those 18-29 approve of Obama’s handling of youth unemployment
  • While the president has touted raising taxes on the wealthy as a key component to financial solvency, 69 percent of 18-29-year-olds prefer reductions in federal spending over raising taxes to balance the budget.
The numbers prompted the organization to launch its newest Facebook page, “We Like Small Government.”

The organization claims its newest page “fosters debate on the appropriate size and scope of government, the impact high taxes and more regulations have on job creation and the importance of economic opportunity and individual freedom. The page has already amassed over 400,000 fans.”

Other GO pages, like “The Constitution by GO” and “Being American by GO” have amassed over 1 million and 1.5 million Facebook “likes,” respectively.

The Facebook pages are part of GO’s strategy to create what Conway called “a true fusion” of education efforts, field organizers, online tools and a social-media audience.

“We have a full-time, paid staff and a huge volunteer network to help with a series of events,” Conway told WND. “In the past 10 days, we’ve hit 10 states and 35 different events, booths to meet people or sign up people with iPads, to meet with those who feel disaffected, those who are not registered to vote, we work to register them – tens of thousands of people.

“We also have campaigns to call voters, reminding them to vote, and a series of training guides on our website,” Conway said. “We’ve already had tens of thousands of downloads, people using the guides to organize friends, learning from guides on how to be an effective radio call-in guest, how to organize events, how to blog, write a press release or a letter to the editor and more.

“The response has been fantastic,” Conway said. “We tell the young voters, ‘We know you changed history in 2008; we know you can do it again in 2012.’”

Obama/Biden...I'm running out of duct tape!
By: Diane Sori

It’d been a bad few months in Obama/Bidenland and I couldn’t be happier about it.  While the list of foot-in-mouth moments is endless a few of the many stick out in my mind.

Let’s start with Obama’s comment, “You didn’t build that,” his now famous line where he said if you had a successful business it wasn’t because of your own hard work and determination...it was because government helped you build it.  Yeah right.  And then when he tried to back-peddle and say he meant the roads and bridges leading to the business I couldn’t stop laughing.

This guffaw is a classic example of why Obama uses teleprompters every chance he can, and tries to be so well scripted when he can’t.  Obama will always reveal his true self and what he really believes during moments of unscripted, teleprompter free spontaneity, as was the case here when this ridiculous bloviation spewed from his mouth.

Next came Obama’s claim that the economy is indeed improving, completely ignoring the fact that the unemployment rate rose to 8.4% up from 8.3% the previous month.  Obama and his spin meisters really tried to pull the wool over our eyes with that one by saying look how many new jobs were created, never telling that more people went on disability and the unemployment rolls than the number of jobs created thus negating out those numbers...hence the rise in the unemployment rate.

This man must really think ‘We the People’ are stupid...unemployment numbers cannot go up if jobs are truly being created and I do NOT mean government jobs; I mean private sector jobs, the backbone of this country’s economy. Economics 101 again but Obama must have been absent smoking weed or doing some blow (as he says in his book) the day that was taught.

The core of Obama’s economic ideology not only admonishes personal success, but claims that all you achieve leading up to your success is because of government help, and therefore you must share your success with the government and everyone else.  Sounds more like socialism or worse, communism, if you ask me.  With Obama’s true ideology now blatantly thrown in our faces, I believe this election will really be a referendum on what kind of America we want to live in...an America where personal achievement and success is valued and worth striving for or an America where everyone has claim to your success while they sit back and do nothing.

It’s so sad how the American entrepreneurial spirit has been so degraded under the watch of this man...so sad indeed.

Now let’s move on to Obama’s infamous PAC ad that states for all intents and purposes that Mitt Romney was responsible for a women’s death from cancer.  We all know the ad in question but what the PAC ad doesn’t tell you is that years before the man’s job was lost due to a plant shut down Romney had already left Bain to run the Olympics.  The PAC ad also doesn’t tell you that the year the plant was closed an Obama supporter and donator was the head of Bain, and that it was he NOT Romney who made the decision to shut down the plant in question.  And the PAC ad doesn’t tell you that the man’s wife had her own insurance from her own job or that she got sick years after the husband lost his job.

An ad of pure hate and out and out lies, Obama approved and sanctioned because there is phone evidence that people in his administration had been interviewing the man in this ad many times before for different ads until BINGO this was the ‘story’ they could use.  And believe me Obama knows what his peeps are doing even if he says he does not.

Just like he didn’t know about Fast and Furious...yeah right.

And now even today, all Obama and his minions keep harping on is Mitt Romney’s tax returns.  This entire tomfoolery is fueled by ‘Prince’ Harry Reid’s ridiculous statement that he does NOT have to prove where he got the info that Romney did not pay his taxes but that Romney has to prove he did.  And now the infamous Obama lapdog and Nancy Pelosi wannbe, DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz, is adding her whiny, nails on a chalkboard voice into the mix demanding that Romney show us his tax returns NOW!

Here’s a good one for all on team Obama who want to see Mitt Romney’s tax returns...have Obama show us his REAL birth certificate, his REAL social security card, his REAL college transcripts, his REAL military ID card, and ALL other REAL documents asked for, and then and only then will Mitt Romney show you his tax returns, which BTW, are NOT required to be shown to run for president.

And lastly, let’s move on to Uncle Joe ‘Bite-Me’ Biden himself.  Where to begin, there’s just so much, but for the sake of the reader let’s just sum it up with this...after weeks of total asinine statements and comments, including his latest racially charged claim that Mitt Romney wants to put people ‘back in chains,’ Uncle Joe is heading home to Delaware to lick his wounds.  I can’t off the top of my head think of any VP that suffers from such a bad case of ‘foot-in-mouth’ disease as this man does, but you know what, every time he says something stupid Romney’s numbers go up.  So keep it up Joe, we Republicans just love it every time you open your mouth!

As always, November 6th can’t come fast enough for me.

Romney 2.0: The Paul Ryan Effect

By: David Malcolm  / Townhall.com

Romney 2.0: The Paul Ryan Effect
Mitt Romney’s choice of Republican Congressman and budget guru Paul Ryan as his running mate has profoundly altered the presidential race. In selecting the wonkish, articulate Ryan, Mitt Romney has enhanced his campaign, and thereby his chances of winning the presidency, by arming the GOP ticket with an eloquent mouthpiece whose bold policy prescriptions strengthen Romney’s campaign with a reform-minded seriousness the Obama-Biden ticket simply cannot match.

Not surprisingly, even though Ryan has been Romney’s running mate for less than a week, the polls already reflect Americans’ buoyed confidence in the Romney-Ryan combo. Both Gallup and Rasmussen had Romney up by two in polls released days after Ryan’s announcement. Romney has also gained ground in some key swing state polls.

From a policy standpoint, the Ryan choice resolved all questions regarding Romney’s positions on the most important issues (economic) this election. By choosing Ryan, Romney has unabashedly affiliated himself with the reform wing of the GOP, put to rest any lingering doubts about his conservative bona fides, and appropriated for his cause a man whose bold ideas and able public defense of them call to mind the party’s best days when good policy intersected with good politics, e.g. Reagan’s defense buildup, 1990s welfare reform, Bush’s tax cuts, etc.

Importantly, on a broader political level, Romney’s choice ensures 2012 will not be a repeat of 2008, when a lack of planning and serious forethought gave way to a shotgun Republican vice presidential selection based not on policy substance or fitness for office, but on an urgent need to reinvigorate a lackluster campaign. The results speak for themselves.

In complete contrast here, after prevailing in the Republican primaries and polling evenly with Obama even before choosing Ryan, Romney chose Ryan from a position of surging political strength. And by choosing Ryan, the Romney campaign has fueled the momentum it gained from the primaries, and it is now poised to build on that strength towards the general election. Indeed, watching the energetic, youthful Ryan campaign in Colorado following his selection reveals just how much heft the campaign has gained in just a short period of time. His smile and charisma call to mind a great Democratic politician who captured the affections of a generation, and we do not mean President Obama.

In both style and substance, then, the Ryan choice was an unadulterated success. Further, Ryan’s selection answered the implicit question posed by the Romney campaign theme: Believe In America. But what kind of America? The Ryan choice means Romney believes in an America that works, lives within its means, and does not hide behind vapid slogans in service of a failed 1960s agenda. In other words, it shows Romney believes America would be better if all Americans worked and succeeded as he has. Accordingly, he and his new running mate plan to take America in a vastly different direction than the one President Obama envisions and has ushered in. The turnaround cannot come soon enough.

Perfectly consistent with and complementary of Romney’s vision are Ryan’s views, gleaned from his budget proposals and myriad YouTube videos. As Ryan told the president at the February 2010 White House healthcare summit, he has a different vision of Washington’s role in the citizen’s life. Watching Ryan school the Democrats on the policy minutiae and gimmickry of Obamacare, it is evident he, in contrast to the opposition, actually knows what he is talking about on the issues, and he cares deeply for how legislation will practically affect Americans, rather than how it will sell politically. His boldness in advancing sensible Medicare reform is completely inconsistent with a re-election above all mindset. The same cannot be said of the current White House occupant.

Finally, Mitt Romney’s selection of Paul Ryan may have the incidental benefit of elevating the substance and tone of the political discourse over the next three months. At a recent speech at Georgetown University, Ryan said, “Serious problems like those we face today require charitable conversation.” In the wake of the Obama campaign’s malicious and false attacks on Mitt Romney, and Joe Biden’s continuous gaffes that call into question his mental capacity, all Americans should relish the thought of mud slinging giving way to charitable conversation, a serious appraisal of the challenges we face, and a serious evaluation of which presidential ticket has the best solutions to address them. By choosing Paul Ryan, Mitt Romney has deftly equipped himself to do just that.

Joe Biden Shakes Those Chains

By: Ken Blackwell  / Townhall Daily

We thought Joe Biden couldn't top--or bottom--the appalling gaffe of calling a 2010 White House bill signing ceremony "a big f___ing deal." But he just did it. In Danville, Virginia this week, Biden told a largely black audience the Republicans were going to "put y'all in chains." Now, of course, his staff is backpedaling furiously. He meant the banks. He was talking about banking de-regulation, they bleat frantically. Sure he was.

If any conservative, any Republican had made such a statement, he'd have been fired. Agriculture Sec. Fred Butz was fired in 1976 within hours of telling a dirty joke offensive to black Americans (and most others). Majority Leader Trent Lott lost his post when he joked about Strom Thurmond being elected president. Old Strom had been a segregationist candidate in 1948.

But Joe Biden gets a pass from the press. No one asks to see his birth certificate. That's because he is daily showing us his dearth certificate. He shows us a dearth of common sense.

Biden tried to identify with one Southern audience by bragging that his state of Delaware had slaves!

So who was it, Mr. Vice President, that broke those slave chains? It was the Republicans. Republican Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation and signed the Thirteenth Amendment outlawing slavery. It was Republicans who passed the Thirteenth, Fourteenth, and Fifteenth Amendments to the Constitution that abolished slavery, provided for equal protection for former slaves, and extended the suffrage to them.

Every vote cast against those constitutional amendments was cast by a Democrat. Every vote cast against every Civil Rights Act in the Nineteenth Century was cast by a Democrat.

Moving on up to the Twentieth Century, every vote cast against the anti-lynching laws routinely introduced and passed by Republicans in the House was cast by a Democrat. Not until 1957 were we able to make lynching a federal crime--thanks to Republican President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Republicans provided the Senate votes to break a filibuster against the great Civil Rights Act of 1964. Democrats claim Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan had a "Southern Strategy" to win the White House.

That's odd. It was Democrats who had a Southern Strategy from 1791 to 1948.

One of the evidences that Barack Obama had not been in the Senate long enough when he was elected President in 2008 is his choice of Joe Biden as a running mate. Mr. Obama had not hung around the Democratic cloakroom long enough to learn what all the Democrats knew--that Joe Biden is prone to make the most foolish statements in public. There's a good reason why Joe Biden was a U.S. Senator for 36 years and even his fellow Democrats never suggested making him their Majority Leader.

When Joe Biden went to Moscow in 1979, he told the Soviets the U.S. cared about arms control more than about human rights. As a result, we got no arms control, and thousands of Russians were thrown into the Gulag.

In 1988, he ran around the country running for president, giving an amazingly eloquent speech to Democratic audiences. He earned new respect from all hearers--until they learned that he had cribbed the entire speech from British Labour Party Leader Neil Kinnock. Plagiarism can get you suspended if you are Fareed Zakaria of the media. For Joe Biden, plagiarism got him promoted.

There's a wonderful story about President Theodore Roosevelt going down in the first submarine. Reporters lined the pier. "Please, Mr. President, don't go down unless you take Vice President Fairbanks with you!"

Now we know why we've never seen President Obama in a submarine.
