Global average temperature has been flat for a decade. But frightening myths about global warming continue.

We're told there are more hurricanes now. We're told that hurricanes are stronger. But the National Hurricane Center says it isn't so.

Meteorologist Maria Molina told me it's not surprising that climatologists assumed hurricanes would get worse. "Hurricanes need warm ocean waters," but it turns out that "hurricanes are a lot more complicated than just warm ocean waters."

Computer models have long predicted nasty effects from our production of greenhouse gasses. But the nasty effects have not appeared. As far as hurricanes, more hit the United States in the 1880s than recently.

Why do people believe that global warming has already created bigger storms? Because when "experts" repeatedly tell us that global warming will wreck the Earth, we start to fit each bad storm into the disaster narrative that's already in our heads.

Also, attention-seeking media wail about increased property damage from hurricanes. And it's true! Costs have grown! But that's because more people build on coastlines, not because storms are stronger or more frequent.

Also, thanks to modern media and camera phones, we hear more about storms, and see the damage. People think Hurricane Katrina, which killed 1,800 people, was the deadliest storm ever. But the 1900 Galveston hurricane killed 10,000 people. We just didn't have so much media then.

Climatologist Patrick Michaels, director of the Center for the Study of Science at the Cato Institute, says humans don't have as much impact on global temperature as the doomsayers feared.

"Forecasts of global warming -- particularly in the last two years -- have begun to come down," he says. "We're seeing the so-called 'sensitivity' of temperature being reduced by 40 percent in the new climate models. It means we're going to live."

Michaels is tired of dire predictions. "I have lived through nine end-of-the-world environmental apocalypses, beginning with (the 1962 environmental book) 'Silent Spring,' and, you know, we're still here."

As a consumer reporter, I fell for dire predictions about cellphones, Y2K and pesticides.

Maybe the new scare will be killer bees, flesh-eating bacteria or bird flu. The media always hype something.

Since this is hurricane season, let's at least debunk one specific myth about preparing for hurricanes: the idea you should use masking tape to put X's on your windows. Government brochures did recommend that in the 1930s, but now the National Hurricane Center calls it a mistake.

It won't stop glass from shattering, says Molina, but "now you have larger pieces of glass -- potentially deadlier pieces of glass -- flying around. ... What you should be doing during a hurricane is be in a room with no windows and in a lower part of your home."

I'm a global warming skeptic not because I don't believe the world will get warmer. It may. Climate changes. It always has. Man's carbon output might make it worse.

But just because humans sometimes damage the environment doesn't mean government is competent to fix the problem. That's the biggest myth of all.

Government is the same institution that takes over forests to "protect" them -- but then builds logging roads into forests to cut down trees that unsubsidized, private roads might never have reached. The forests end up smaller, but people still assume they're safer in government hands than in greedy private hands.

Government is the institution that puts itself in charge of caring for wildlife, but recently sent a dozen armed agents into a Wisconsin animal shelter to seize and kill a baby deer named Giggles who was being nursed back to health there, since Giggles wasn't in the right type of approved shelter.

When government screws up, we're supposed to say, "They meant well." When individuals pursuing their own interests screw up, we're supposed to feel ashamed of industrial civilization and let government punish and control us all. If we let it do that, government will do to the economy what it did to Giggles.

Finally. Four years after Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan walked into the Soldier Readiness Processing Center at Fort Hood, Texas, and perpetrated the bloodiest massacre ever on an American military base, the self-confessed jihadist's court martial proceedings began this week. Have you forgotten?

Americans obsessed over the O.J. Simpson, Casey Anthony and Jodi Arias trials. Gun-control lobbyists turned Newtown, Aurora and Tucson into national awareness-raising, fundraising and legislation-promoting campaigns. But where are the celebrity lobbyists and high-profile advocates for the victims of bloodthirsty Muslim vigilante Nidal Hasan?

The White House, which downplayed the terrorist mass murder as "workplace violence," exacerbated national apathy for his evil acts. Our soldiers deserve better. Here are three facts you've probably forgotten -- or never knew -- about the Fort Hood terror spree.

--Fourteen victims fell on Nov. 5, 2009, not 13. Thirteen of our U.S. military personnel died in cold blood at the deployment center. But the death toll was actually 14. Pvt. Francheska Velez, 21, was pregnant when Hasan shot her during the first round of gunfire. At a military Article 32 hearing in 2010 (analogous to a civilian grand jury hearing), a survivor of the Fort Hood shootings testified that Velez cried out, "My baby! My baby!"

In his opening statement on Tuesday, Hasan (acting as his own lawyer) apologized to his fellow jihadists for not destroying more innocent life.

--The victims were all unarmed. Soldiers inside the deployment center were and are forbidden from carrying weapons -- either issued weapons or personal arms -- on base. When Hasan commenced his shooting spree by shouting, "Allahu Akbar," several brave men and women in uniform used chairs, tables and their own bodies to try to stop him. But it wasn't until a courageous, armed civilian police officer, Sgt. Kimberley Munley, arrived on the scene with her 9mm Beretta that Hasan's rampage was interrupted.

In a gunfight outside the deployment center, Munley wounded Hasan -- who was able to return fire and shot her in the hand, thigh and knee. While she lay on the ground, Hasan kicked away her weapon. Another armed civilian police officer, Mark Todd, was able to fire at Hasan five times and brought him down.

Gun-control zealots led by the Brady Campaign To Prevent Gun Violence exploited Fort Hood to argue for even tighter gun restrictions. But it was a 1993 Clinton administration gun-control directive banning most military personnel from carrying their arms for personal protection that facilitated Hasan's massacre except under very limited circumstances. Despite the death of 13 soldiers and the wounding of more than 30 at Fort Hood by a jihadist who warned his superiors that Muslim soldiers posed a specific threat, gun-free military base policies remain in place.

--Hasan's military colleagues were more concerned with being accused of discrimination than with ridding our military of this known, deranged Islamic radical. In 2007, two years before he carried out his homicidal plan, Hasan laid out his murderous means, motives and Koranic inspiration for all to see.

His PowerPoint slide presentation to fellow Army doctors was titled: "The Koranic World View As It Relates to Muslims in the U.S. Military." Hasan warned: "It's getting harder and harder for Muslims in the service to morally justify being in a military that seems constantly engaged against fellow Muslims." And: "We love death more then (sic) you love life!" As first reported by Pamela Geller, Hasan carried an official calling card with the designation "SoA (SWT)" -- for "Soldier of Allah" and "Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala" (Islamic for "Glory to Him, the Exalted").

Hasan told his superiors he was not alone among Muslim soldiers who believed they "should not serve in any capacity that renders them at risk to hurting/killing believers unjustly."

He reminded the Army of the fatal 2003 fragging attack on American soldiers in Kuwait by Sgt. Hasan Akbar (who was sentenced to death but remains alive while his case drags on in appeal) and the desertion case of Lebanon-born Muslim Marine Wassef Ali Hassoun.

A Joint Terrorism Task Force had been monitoring Hasan's communications with jihad spiritual leader Anwar al-Awlaki all along. But the military was not notified. Even without that information, military officers expressed concerns privately that Hasan might leak classified information to terror groups if he were deployed and that he was capable of committing a fragging.

Yet, they were prepared to deploy him anyway and did nothing to remove him from his job. One email from an Army investigator before the Fort Hood massacre fretted: "Had we launched an investigation of Hasan we'd have been crucified."

Instead, 13 soldiers and one unborn child were slaughtered and paid with their lives for our country's reckless political correctness and bureaucratic fecklessness.
Rubio’s Tea Party Comeback August 7, 2013 0 rubio PSL2 Marco Rubio/ The Shark Tank By JAVIER MANJARRES Senator Marco Rubio is probably adrift on his boat somewhere down in the Florida Keys, as he is vacationing with his ‘familia’ before hitting the road again to make his case to defund President Obama’s Obamacare law. Rubio, along with Senators Mike Lee, Ted Cruz, and others, is pushing to exclude funding for Obamacare in the upcoming short-term budget negotiations. Rubio’s road trip could also be perceived as an immigration reform damage control play, as many Floridians took issue with him over his amnesty-lite policy shift on the immigration issue. It is fair to say that Rubio sustained a self-inflicted near-death blow to his reputation and political career when he embraced liberal Democratic Senators Charles Schumer, Dick Durbin, and John McCain, in co-sponsoring the Senate ‘Gang of 8′ immigration reform bill. But is Rubio’s reputation completely shot with conservatives? Many conservatives believe that he is still the same ole’ “Marquito” they have always known, and also believe that he is still the same pro-life, anti-tax, and anti-big government person they voted into office in 2010. Rubio has stated that aside from immigration reform, he is as conservative as always. And in defense of Rubio, he does have the voting record in the Senate to prove his conservative bona fides, but the immigration issue still looms large with many conservatives that feel he betrayed them. Can Rubio win back his Tea Party support? A few weeks ago, Rubio was asked whether he supported Common Core and all of the bells and whistles that go along with it, including the data mining of student information. Rubio firmly stated that he was completely against Common Core, putting himself at odds with his political mentor, former Florida Governor Jeb Bush. And I am very concerned, and quite frankly opposed to any effort to try to create some sort of national curriculum standard and then try to leverage the power of the federal government’s funding to force states to adopt a certain curriculum standard. State and local levels are the best places to come up with curriculum reform, and its something the federal government shouldn’t be deeply involved in.-Senator Marco Rubio Common Core is a huge issue for grassroots activists and pundits across the nation, by Rubio coming out against these education standards, conservative activists and Tea Party folks are cautiously giving him a second chance. If Rubio continues to stay the course of opposing big government and tax increases, not to mention Common Core, it will only be a matter of time before grassroots activists completely warm back up to him. Remember, Rubio needs the grassroots in order to have any chance of winning the 2016 Republican Presidential nomination. - See more at: http://shark-tank.net/2013/08/07/rubios-tea-party-comeback/#sthash.ziE6wIGE.dpuf

20 Cities That May Face Bankruptcy After Detroit
By Stephen Moore

Think Motown is the only major U.S. city in a boatload of financial trouble? Think again.

Detroit's bankruptcy filing sent shivers down the spine of municipal bondholders, government employees, and big-city urban residents all over the country.

That's because many of the 61 largest U.S. cities are plagued with the same kinds of retirement legacy costs that sent Detroit into Chapter 9 bankruptcy this summer.

These cities have amassed $118 billion in unfunded healthcare liabilities. These are legal promises to pay healthcare benefits to municipal workers beyond the employee contributions to finance those funds. This is a giant fiscal sink hole — and because of defined benefit plans, the hole keeps getting deeper.

Detroit may be the largest city in American history to go bankrupt, but it is not alone. The city raced to the financial insolvency finish line before anyone else in its class.

Keep an eye on "too big to fail" cities like Chicago, Philadelphia, and New York.

According to an analysis by the Manhattan Institute, several Chicago pension funds are in worse financial shape than the worker pensions in Detroit. One is only 25 percent funded, and where the other 75 percent of the money will come from is anyone's guess. And there are about a dozen major California cities having systemic problems paying their bills.

Here is my worry list, based on bond ratings and other data, of the top 20 cities to watch for financial troubles in the wake of the Detroit story:

1. Compton, Calif.
Compton has teetered on the brink of bankruptcy after it accrued a general-fund deficit of more than $40 million by borrowing from other funds, depleting what had been a $22 million reserve.

2. East Greenbush, N.Y.
A New York state audit concluded that years of fiscal mismanagement — including questionable employment contracts and illegal payments to town officials — left East Greenbush more than $2 million in debt.

3. Fresno, Calif.
Fresno had the ratings of its lease-revenue bonds downgraded to junk-level by Moody's, which also downgraded its convention center and pension obligation bonds due to the city's "exceedingly weak financial position."

4. Gulf County, Fla.
Fitch Ratings warned that Gulf County's predominately rural economy is "narrowly focused," with income levels one-quarter below national averages and economic indicators for the county also comparing unfavorably to national averages.

5. Harrisburg, Pa.
Harrisburg is at least $345 million in debt, thanks largely to municipal bonds it guaranteed in order to finance upgrades to its problematic waste-to-energy trash incinerator.

6. Irvington, N.J.
Irvington has a violent crime rate six times higher than New Jersey's average, with Moody's citing "wealth indicators below state and national averages and tax-base and population declines due to increased tax appeals and foreclosures."

7. Jefferson County, Ala.
Jefferson County, home to the city of Birmingham, has been dealing with the collapse of refinancing for a sewer bond. It filed for bankruptcy protection in 2011 over a $3.14 billion sewer bond debt.

8. Menasha, Wis.
Menasha defaulted on bonds in 2007 it had issued to fund a steam plant which has since closed and left the city permanently in the red and, as of 2011, had $16 million in general fund revenue, but had $43.4 million in outstanding debt.

9. Newburgh, N.Y.
Newburgh was cited by Moody's for "tax base erosion and a weak socioeconomic profile," with 26 percent of its population below the poverty line and its school district facing a $2 million budget gap.

10. Oakland, Calif.
Oakland is trying to get out of a Goldman Sachs-brokered interest rate swap that is costing it $4 million a year. According to a recent city audit, Oakland has lost $250 million from a 1997 pension obligation bond sale and subsequent investment strategy.

Muhammad filmmaker, U.S. political prisoner: "I’m not afraid"

From Jihad Watch / Posted by Robert Spencer

Nakoula, or Youssef, or whatever his name is, clearly has a spotty record. But no matter who he really is, no matter how checkered his past or present or both may be, make no mistake: he was a political prisoner. He was imprisoned not for the technicality of the probation violation, but for insulting Muhammad and Islam. His imprisonment was symbol of America's capitulation to the Sharia.

"Imprisoned ‘Innocence of Muslims’ producer Nakoula Nakoula: ‘I want the world to see the truth,’" by Charles C. Johnson in the Daily Caller, August 5
In his first interview since his supervised release from prison, the filmmaker behind “Innocence of Muslims” told The Daily Caller that he “has no regrets” and promises more films and books about Islam.
Nakoula Basseley Nakoula is the only person who has been imprisoned in the aftermath of the organized Sept. 11, 2012 terrorist attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, in which the ambassador and three other Americans were killed. He was wholly unconnected to the attack and was imprisoned on technical probation violations.
“The first reason I am writing this book is to tell the world we never forget our heroes and the second reason is to tell [everyone] that I’m not afraid,” Nakoula writes in a foreword obtained exclusively by The Daily Caller.
“I want the world to see the truth,” Nakoula told TheDC over the phone.
The interview was arranged after multiple letters to his former prison in El Paso, Texas.
Nakoula is currently targeted with assassination from several Muslim clerics, including the head of Hezbollah, who have put fatwas on his head. He spoke from an undisclosed location in Southern California.
Nakoula is upset that his film has been blamed for causing the Benghazi terrorist attack. His book is dedicated to both the victims of Benghazi and of terrorism around the world.
“Ambassador Chris Stevens, Information Officer Sean Smith, former Navy SEAL Tyrone Woods, and Glen Doherty and to every son who has lost his father, every mother or father who has their son, every person all over the world [who] lost his life or [was] injured because of the terrorism culture,” Nakoula writes in his foreword. “I would like to tell you you’re not forgotten.”
Nakoula, who had prior felony convictions on drug and bank fraud charges, was on probation when he made the trailer. Following the Benghazi debacle, the Obama administration claimed the film had incited the attack, and Nakoula was arrested and returned to prison for violating probation terms that prohibited him from using an alias (he had gone by “Sam Bacile” in making the film) or using the Internet without prior approval.
The U.S. State Department and the White House, which characterize the amateur video as “hate speech” or “Islamophobic” have pressured Google to remove the trailer for Nakoula’s film.
Nakoula hopes to complete the film and has made storyboards of other scenes that he hopes to include, showing Mohammed on jihad and engaging in sex acts — all based, he told TheDC, on Islamic books and evidence from the time period...

Op-ed:
Another manufactured crisis to divert us from Benghazi
By: Diane Sori

Last week it was reveled that intelligence from conversations between Ayman al Zawahiri (the head of al-Qaeda in Pakistan) and Nasser al Wuhayshi (the head of al-Qaeda in Yemen), discovered that plans were in the works to carry out an attack or attacks on American interests in the Middle East as early as last Sunday…and the NSA intercepted it all.

Well, well… how convenient…we knew it would be just matter of time before Obama and his minions claimed that NSA spying saved us all from a horrible fate…and as expected it happened.

Deflect and divert has become an art form to these people, and the media is their private PR firm as they push the story that the subsequent closing of our embassies was in response to those threats, and using it as a way of justifying the NSA spying going on all around us.

Now I'm NOT saying that NO threats were uncovered but NO one with even one working brain cell would release specifics about that critical of information or what our response to it would be. All would be done secretly and covertly to keep the enemy guessing NOT blasting it out so the enemy could plan accordingly.

So, this disclosure must be promoted as NOTHING more than a coincidence after all the furor and bru-ha-ha about the monitoring of our personal telephone calls and internet surfing…but I think NOT for NOTHING Obama does is done by perchance. All is cleverly calculated, manipulated, and done with cutting edge precision to inflict as much damage on America and ‘We the People’ as possible.

And sadly, aiding him in this endeavor, whether deliberately or just through plain stupidity, is Saxby Chambliss (the top Republican on the Senate Intelligence Committee), who said the decision to close the embassies was based on information collected by the NSA. “If we did not have these programs, we simply would not be able to listen in on the bad guys”…to which I say cluelessness has just reached a new level of absurdity because monitoring of ‘bad guys’ has been going on for years…years before Barack HUSSEIN Obama stole the office of the presidency through voter fraud, intimidation, and media infatuation.

And then along comes RINO extraordinaire Senator Lindsey Graham who had to stick his two-cents in and say that, “the NSA program is proving its worth yet again”. NO Senator Graham it is NOT for the NSA is now spying on American citizens…law abiding, everyday American citizens instead of what was its intended objective of just spying on ‘the enemy’.

So now the NSA is being portrayed as the heroes in all this, and sadly even by some supposedly on our side (we all know who they are and I wish they’d just put the ‘D’ after their name and be done with it)…people who should know better…as embassy after embassy remain closed in countries we have normal diplomatic relations with, and all because of a ‘nonspecific threat’ picked up by the very agency that is under investigation for overstepping their bounds…kind of makes you wonder doesn’t it.

And when you really think about it all…all the events of this week…all the hype and all fear mongering…this is quite laughable in its in-your-face obviousness for even while all this is happening Obama keeps claiming that the core of al-Qaeda is, as he says, “greatly diminished”. Well if the core is “greatly diminished” why close the embassies…oh wait…I know why…he needs the threat of impending doom to divert us away from all the new Benghazi information that’s starting to leak out….he needs that threat so we’ll stop whining that we’re being spied on…as in Big Brother is watching us…by the very people who saved our embassy personnel from a horrible fate.

Sickening…it’s all quite sickening.

And while the parade of Obama mouthpieces appeared on the usual left-leaning talk shows over the weekend (shades of Susan Rice I’d say), and continue to do so as the week progresses, promoting the Obama prearranged lying rhetoric that the security threat to our embassies proves just how necessary the NSA spying program is in order to keep us safe both at home and overseas, prosecutors have now filed the first charges against militia leader Ahmed Khattalah in the ‘muslim terrorist attack’ (three words that you know you’ll never hear from Obama’s mouth) on the Benghazi consulate.

Yeah, it’s well and fine to charge the militia leader who carried out the actual attack but the prosecutors keep ignoring the man (who I believe is) behind it all…ignoring the man who told those who could help to ‘stand down’…ignoring the man who caused Benghazi in the first place with his under-the-table gun running to the al-Qaeda backed Syrian rebels…ignoring the man who deliberately and with malice left four Americans behind to be brutally murdered by his muslim brethren…yeah, keep ignoring that man and these prosecutors become just as guilty as the man they ignored…Barack HUSSEIN Obama.

And so the plot thickens as Obama hopes his manufactured embassy crisis gives the NSA hero status to counter the before unheard of spying on ‘We the People’ and takes our minds off Benghazi…well guess what…if there’s even one patriot left who will NOT let Benghazi be forgotten Barack HUSSEIN Obama will somehow someway be made to answer for leaving four Americans behind to die.
