Chemical weapons are evil, but you could also say they're a curse. They have a talismanic power to bend and distort U.S. foreign policy. You can ask George W. Bush or Barack Obama.

In 2003, then-Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz gave a lengthy interview to Vanity Fair that caused a huge uproar, largely because the magazine shamefully distorted what he was trying to say. Wolfowitz explained that within the Bush administration there were a lot of arguments for why we should invade Iraq. Some had to do with the fact that Saddam Hussein was a state supporter of terrorism. Some had to do with how Hussein treated his own people. Others emphasized alleged links between the regime and 9/11.

And so on.

Each of these arguments had proponents and opponents, Wolfowitz explained. The result was that "we settled on the one issue that everyone could agree on": weapons of mass destruction.

The problem with focusing solely on a single issue turned out to be disastrous for the administration, given that the WMD never materialized. It should have been clear to everyone that few important decisions in life boil down to a single issue.

Something similar has happened to the Obama administration.

"I'm less concerned about style points; I'm much more concerned about getting the policy right," President Obama told ABC's George Stephanopoulos on Sunday, in response to the widespread criticism that his foreign policy has been a hot mess of late.

It's a fair point, even if a bit hypocritical for a president who goes by the moniker "No Drama Obama."

The last few weeks have had more drama than a "Desperate Housewives" franchise during sweeps week. Still, if in some Mr. Magoo-like way the administration has blindly blundered into a policy victory, that's preferable to smoothly sticking the landing on a policy failure.

The question, however, is: What policy?

In his ABC interview, the president repeatedly said that his goal is to do something about chemical weapons: "And what I've said consistently throughout is that the chemical weapons issue is a problem. I want that problem dealt with.

"That's my goal," he declared. "And if that goal is achieved, then it sounds to me like we did something right."

That is a huge bait-and-switch.

Until the Aug. 21 chemical weapons attack in the Damascus suburbs, the administration was not primarily concerned with chemical weapons. It was concerned with doing whatever it could -- short of intervening militarily -- to see to it that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad either step down or be forced out. In 2011, Obama said: "For the sake of the Syrian people, the time has come for President Assad to step aside." And, a year later: "I have indicated repeatedly that President al-Assad has lost legitimacy, that he needs to step down." And in May at a news conference with the Turkish prime minister: "We both agree that Assad needs to go. ... That is the only way we're going to resolve this crisis. And we're going to keep working for a Syria that is free from Assad's tyranny."

That goal is now dead. The new Putin-Obama compact is a boon to Assad in that it brings him into the so-called international community America has spent the last two years trying to kick him out of.

This "represents an astonishing victory for the Assad regime," writes Bloomberg's Jeffrey Goldberg (no relation). So long as Assad only massacres his own people -- including children -- with old-fashioned weapons, he's immune to international force. Worse, Assad is now our partner because getting his WMD is now more important than getting rid of him. We've gone from siding with the rebels to acting like a boxing ref with no investment in who wins so long as neither side strikes any low blows.

Obviously, in reality, the Obama's short-term goal was to avoid getting into an unpopular war precipitated by his own ill-considered statements or being humiliated by a congressional no vote precipitated by his decision to punt the issue to Capitol Hill. But what made that goal achievable was the curse of chemical weapons.
Warning: Our Government Is a Threat to Public Safety
By: Michelle Malkin / Townhall Columnist

Forget gun control. America needs government control. Have you noticed the common thread among several mass killings and homeland security incidents lately?

Time and again, it's the control freaks in Washington who have fallen down on their jobs, allowing crazies, creeps and criminals to roam free and wreak havoc while ignoring rampant red flags. Let's review:

Washington Navy Yard shooter Aaron Alexis: Despite gun-grabbing Democrats' best efforts to blame a nonexistent "AR-15" for this week's horrific Navy Yard massacre, the truth is seeping out about shooter Aaron Alexis. The 34-year-old Navy veteran had been treated since August by the Veterans Administration for a host of mental problems that plagued him for up to a decade.

Officials say Alexis was paranoid, had a sleep disorder, suffered from schizophrenia and was "hearing voices." He told Newport, R.I., police after an altercation just last month that he believed a "microwave machine" was sending vibrations through a wall into his body. Friends say he was a heavy drinker and violent video game addict. A ticking time bomb, he had racked up a string of misconduct incidents during his military stint ranging from absenteeism to insubordination to disorderly conduct. He was arrested in Seattle in 2004 and in Fort Worth, Texas, in 2010 for separate anger-fueled shootings that terrorized neighbors and innocent bystanders.

Yet somehow Alexis passed several military background checks, gained high-level security clearance and had access to multiple military installations. The civilian contractor who employed Alexis blasted the feds on Tuesday for failing to fully disclose his history. "Anything that suggests criminal problems or mental health issues, that would be a flag," Thomas Hoshko of The Experts told The Washington Post. "We would not have hired him." And 12 innocent people might still be alive today.

Fort Hood jihadist Nidal Hasan: The red flag-ignoring government seems to have become an affirmative action employer for rage-filled madmen. Fort Hood jihadist Nidal Hasan, sentenced to death last month, had warned his military superiors well in advance of the massacre that he was prone to violence. Citing convicted Army fragger Hasan Akbar and others, Hasan emphasized that he was not alone among Muslim soldiers who believed they "should not serve in any capacity that renders them at risk to hurting/killing believers unjustly."

The feds buried concerns about Hasan and instead kept him employed to prevent accusations of discrimination. They did not want to be "crucified," according to one Army investigator. Twelve innocent men and women, plus one unborn baby, died as a consequence of the government's malign neglect and feckless indulgence of political correctness.

TSA nutball Nna Alpha Onuoha: Then there's the TSA. Last week, a former TSA agent was arrested on the 12th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks for calling in threats to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and warning that there would be a "baptism of fire" on 9/11/13. Investigators found a raft of handwritten nutball notes by disgruntled TSA screener 29-year-old Nna Alpha Onuoha tacked up in his closet. Onuoha also operated a bizarro website titled Satanhasfallen.org, which featured "end of the world" essays. He was the same TSA agent who made headlines earlier this summer after harassing a 15-year-old girl at LAX over her modest apparel.

How did this young, single male from Nigeria of limited means get into the country in the first place, let alone end up at the TSA? I've heard from countless veterans and former police officers over the years who were rejected from TSA positions for being "overqualified." Yet somehow Onuoha moved to the front of the TSA employment line.

How many more? The agency's lax background checks and politically correct hiring practices are notorious. In July, the Government Accountability Office reported a 26-percent rise in employee misconduct violations over the past three years, ranging from theft to chronic sleeping on the job to ignoring basic screening protocols. Discipline is inconsistent to nonexistent. Last year, GOP Rep. Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee documented 50 galling examples of TSA employees arrested for crimes ranging from child pornography, drugs, rape and prostitution to bribery, conspiracy, assault and murder.

Two years ago, another GAO report revealed that TSA's counterterrorism specialists had failed to detect 16 separate jihad operatives who moved through target airports "on at least 23 different occasions." Meanwhile, the Department of Homeland Security has released nearly 3,000 illegal alien sex offenders from detention. And rank-and-file ICE agents blew the whistle this summer on the Obama administration's release of untold numbers of violent criminals who were designated as amnesty-eligible "DREAMers."

The motto of our homeland security overlords is "not on our watch." But like so much else attached to our post-9/11 national security bureaucracy, that motto has become a punchline. With the feds and military leaders looking the other way or closing their eyes altogether to menaces within their ranks, there is no watch. It's a Code Red alert for government incompetence.

Newsmax                                                                                        Reid: 'We Don't Have the Votes' for Gun Control Bill

By Todd Beamon

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said on Tuesday he lacked the votes to bring gun-control legislation to the Senate floor for a vote.

"We’re going to move this up as quickly as we can, but we’ve got to have the votes first," the Nevada Democrat told The Hill. "We don't have the votes. I hope we get them, but we don't have them now."

Reid's comments came in the wake of the slaying of 12 people in a shooting at the Washington Navy Yard.

The gunman, Aaron Alexis, 34, a former Navy reservist who was an information technology employee with a defense contractor, was killed at the scene. The FBI said on Tuesday that he entered the Navy Yard armed with a shotgun.

Alexis, whom authorities said had an arrest record, had been hearing voices and was being treated by Veterans Affairs for mental problems in the weeks before the shooting rampage, FBI officials said.

He was not, however, stripped of his security clearance, the FBI said.

The mass shooting was the deadliest on a military installation in the United States since the attack at Fort Hood, Texas, in 2009.

Reid on Tuesday called for expanded background checks to prevent people with mental illness from obtaining guns.

"Background checks," he said, according to The Hill. "We want to stop people who have mental illness from buying a gun. We want to stop people who are felons from being able to purchase a gun."

An amendment sponsored by GOP Sen. Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania and Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia to expand background checks fell six votes of advancing in April.

Democrats have since shelved gun-violence legislation, The Hill reports.

Some lawmakers, however, have discussed moving a bill narrowly tailored to focus on mental illness, according to The Hill, but Reid said it was not practical to separate it from expanded background checks.

When asked if it's possible to prevent the mentally ill from obtaining firearms, Reid responded: "No, you can't. You have to have background checks."

"I’ve talked to people consistently — and the thing that bothers me is the number of Republicans who say, 'Yeah, we know you’re right, but we can’t do anything about it,'" Reid said, referring to the lobbying power of the National Rifle Association and other gun-rights groups.

Tennessee high school students visit mosque, get Qur'an -- not visiting church or synagogue

From Jihad Watch / Posted by Robert Spencer

The public school officials behind this reveal by their choices of visits that the real agenda here is to make these Tennessee students "accepting of the other," because that is the whole problem of jihad terrorism, doncha know -- if Americans were more accepting of Muslims and Islam, jihad terror would be a thing of the past. There are so many initiatives like this, such as the Arkansas school that planned to feature a Muslim speaker on September 11, that it is hard to escape the conclusion that they really believe this nonsense.

"Students Take Field Trip to Mosque, Receive Koran," by Todd Starnes for Fox News, September 17:
A Tennessee high school has decided to revise its field trip policy after a group of freshmen were taken to an Islamic mosque where they were given copies of the Koran and while a student who opted out of the trip was given a worksheet that alleged Muslims treated their conquered people better than the United States treated minorities.
"There are said to be over ten thousand Jews in Fez, all of whom are obliged to live in the Melha, or Jews' quarter -- the Ghetto, in fact, of Fez. They are particularly odious to the Moor, being held in greater contempt even than Christians; and the interest taken in them by foreign societies tends to make them insolent and independent, increasing thereby the Musselman aversion to them. A few days ago a deputation of Israelites, with a grave and reverend rabbi at their head, waited upon His Excellency to thank him for past favours (he is one of the committee for their protection), and to beg for more. Among other things was a request that he would interest himself in their behalf to get permission from the Sultan for them to wear their shoes in the town. 'We are old, Bashador,' they said, 'and our limbs are weak; our women, too, are delicately nurtured, and this law presses heavily upon us.' Though I can quite sympathise with the poor Hebrew in his non-appreciation of having to walk over such streets as these barefooted, yet I was glad they were dissuaded from pressing their request, the granting of which would exasperate the populace, and might lead to consequences too terrible to contemplate." -- Letter of Dr. A. Miguerez of the Alliance Israelite Universelle, 1880, from Bat Ye'or's The Dhimmi, pp. 320-321
The students were in an honors world studies class at Hendersonville High School and the field trips to the mosque as well as a Hindu temple were part of a three-week course on world religions.
But some parents objected to the trips and wondered why the school would tour a mosque but not a Christian church or a Jewish synagogue.
“If you can’t go to all five, why are you going to any?” asked parent Mike Conner. “We sent the principal an email and voiced our concerns. She sent back a reply and told us they could not afford to go to all five.”
Daily Roll Call reported the students were taken to the Islamic Center of Nashville.
Children were given punch and cookies at the mosque where they listened to readings from the Koran, Conner said. They were also given copies of the Islamic holy book – which some students took and others declined.
During their visit to the Hindu temple, students engaged in meditation.
“Our kids are being indoctrinated and this is being shoved in their face,” Conner told Fox News. “It tells me they are pushing other religions and they want Christianity to take a back seat. They want our children to be tolerant of everything except Christianity.”...

Welcome To Obama’s Syrian Twilight Zone: Gun Control To Prevent Terror Versus Arming Terrorists To Prevent Chemical Weapons

Welcome To Obama’s Syrian Twilight Zone: Gun Control To Prevent Terror Versus Arming Terrorists To Prevent Chemical Weapons
UPI FILE
The Administration of Barack Obama is so dedicated to the idea of getting involved in Syria’s civil war, despite domestic and international objection to the U.S. meddling in the conflict, that it is willing not only to waive provisions of Federal law prohibiting the arming of terrorists but also to put its hypocrisy on full display.

Even as Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov are working on a deal to force Syrian President Bashar Assad to surrender his chemical weapons stockpiles to the international community in return for the assurance that the U.S. will not strike the Syrian government, the Federal government has made moves to ensure its ability to ship supplies to rebels in the Mideast nation.

The President announced earlier in the week that he would “waive the prohibitions in sections 40 and 40A” of the Arms Export Control Act in order to provide assistance to Syrian rebels.

Those sections, which the President can waive if he “determines that the transaction is essential to the national security interests of the United States,” prohibit sending weaponry to countries:

aca

“For purposes of this subsection, such acts shall include all activities that the Secretary determines willfully aid or abet the international proliferation of nuclear explosive devices to individuals or groups or willfully aid or abet an individual or groups in acquiring unsafeguarded special nuclear material,” reads subsection 40(d).

The Obama Administration contends that the provision was waived in order to provide “chemical weapons-related assistance” to “select vetted members” of the Syrian opposition forces.

“This action will allow the U.S. Government to provide . . . where appropriate, certain non-lethal assistance inside or related to Syria,” related to surviving chemical weapons attacks, according to National Security Council spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden.

“This action is part of longstanding and ongoing efforts to provide life-saving chemical weapons-related assistance to people in need in Syria,” Hayden also said.

While the Administration claims that the action will apply only to chemical weapons survival equipment, the sections waived by the President could also apply to lethal munitions.
And some reports indicate U.S. munitions may have already begun making their way into rebel hands.

Via Reuters last week:
The United States is providing lethal assistance “because they are sure that the mechanisms that the SMC has established are well tested and they will be sure that the weapons are not falling into the wrong hands,” [a spokesman for the Syrian Coalition of groups opposed to President Bashar al-Assad] said.
He apparently referred to Washington’s concerns that U.S. arms could end up benefiting radical Islamist groups, such as the al Nusra Front, active in northern Syria.
[The] comments at a Washington news conference may be the first public indication that U.S.-provided military goods such as arms or ammunition are actually moving to anti-Assad forces.
One U.S. government source said it was “unlikely” that any U.S.-supplied arms were on the ground in the hands of Syrian rebels at this time, while not dismissing the possibility that such aid was in the works.
Under section 40(g) of the AECA, Obama must provide Congress 15 days’ notice before handing supplies over to the rebels along with “the name of any country involved in the proposed transaction, the identity of any recipient of the items to be provided pursuant to the proposed transaction, and the anticipated use of the items.”

If the Obama Administration has already begun — or if it plans — to provide munitions to Syrian rebels, it is willing to arm terrorists. There are reports that indicate “half the rebels fighting to topple the Iranian-backed Syrian regime of President Bashar Assad are either diehard al-Qaida jihadists or hardline Islamists.” There are reports of horrible atrocities being carried out by the Syrian rebel groups with no regard to the Geneva Conventions. And there is evidence that people with different ideological leanings than the majority of the rebel faction are doomed to suffer if the opposition is victorious.

Obama has based his steadfast support of the Syrian rebels on reports that Assad has resorted to using chemical weapons to quell the uprising. According to The New York Times on Monday, a “United Nations report … confirmed that a deadly chemical arms attack caused a mass killing in Syria last month and for the first time provided extensive forensic details of the weapons used, which strongly implicated the Syrian government.”

But there is still some international skepticism, mainly from Russia, that the world can be 100 percent sure the Syrian government was responsible for the attacks.

“We want the events of the 21st of August to be impartially, objectively, professionally investigated,” Lavrov said Tuesday, noting that the Syrian regime’s claim that rebels launched the poison gas attack should not be dismissed.

The Obama Administration’s silence with regard to possible atrocities carried out at the hands of Syrian rebels and the lack of explanation about how the U.S. leadership plans to address the heavy extremist influence over the group it could possibly end up arming should be alarming to any observer. It should also highlight a bit of hypocrisy on the part of the Obama Administration.

For months, the President and top Administration officials have been pushing the United Nations’ Arms Trade Treaty on the American people, much to the annoyance of 2nd Amendment supporters who see the treaty as a possible way to abrogate certain American gun rights.

In June, Secretary of State John Kerry said: “The Treaty is an important contribution to efforts to stem the illicit trade in conventional weapons, which fuels conflict, empowers violent extremists, and contributes to violations of human rights. The Treaty will require the parties to implement strict controls, of the kind the United States already has in place, on the international transfer of conventional arms to prevent their diversion and misuse and create greater international cooperation against black market arms merchants. The ATT will not undermine the legitimate international trade in conventional weapons, interfere with national sovereignty, or infringe on the rights of American citizens, including our Second Amendment rights.

“We look forward to signing it as soon as the process of conforming the official translations is completed satisfactorily,” Kerry’s statement continued.

Taken together, all this information leaves the average American with quite a head scratcher: If conservatives hadn’t been going to great pains in recent months to encourage lawmakers to stop the United States from signing the treaty out of fear for the 2nd Amendment, would that very treaty hamstring the Nobel Peace Prize-winning President who advocated its signing from putting weapons directly into the hands of people who will use them to fuel conflict, empower violent extremists and contribute to violations of human rights?

Op-ed:
And the race-baiters remain silent...
By: Diane Sori

It's been all over the news almost non-stop...shades of Fort Hood came back to haunt as Aaron Alexis, a Navy veteran, killed 12 people on Monday and NO one knows why...or do they.

What is currently being reported is that Alexis had serious mental issues severe enough to be treated since August by VA doctors...being treated for hearing voices in his head.

Yet he was given legitimate security clearance to work at the Washington Navy Yard as a result of his work as a contractor...a documented mentally ill individual was given security clearance to a US military facility..

Alexis, a convert to Buddhism (which I only mention because he was NOT a muslim as some suspected) was discharged from the Navy (for disorderly conduct) two years ago after serving hitches in Texas and Illinois.  He had numerous arrests in the past among which was a Seattle arrest in 2004 for shooting out the tires of a construction worker's car in what he claimed was an anger-fueled blackout, and a Texas arrest in September 2010, for firing shots into a neighbors apartment because he said she was too loud.

A loose cannon for sure...a loose cannon who worked for The Experts, a subcontractor on an HP (Hewlett-Packard) Enterprise Services contract to 'refresh' equipment used on the Navy Marine Corps Intranet network.

A loose cannon who Washington DC Mayor Vincent Gray said that while there was still NO motive for the shootings and no indication of terrorism ("we haven't ruled that out")...you just know the words 'workplace violence' will soon be heard.

Soon to be be heard after we all stop laughing from when yesterday Obama publicly blamed the shooting on the sequestration cuts.

And so with NO motive spoken about in the media some who knew Alexis have put forth theories of their own as to why Alexis did what he did...theories including that he was upset with the government because of a dispute over his military benefits, and words to the affect that he would complain about being a victim of discrimination...racial discrimination....and that's why his benefits were denied him...and that's why he did what he did.

And there it is folks and we all knew it was coming...the race angle will be used to excuse this murderer of 12 innocent people because the poor mentally ill man was discriminated against by the military because he was black.  YES, the shooter was black, something the media is trying to down play...trying the best they can NOT say the word 'black' but his picture clearly shows what they won't say...the shooter was black.

When Fort Hood happened...when Sandy Hook happened...when the Boston Marathon shooting happened...and especially when the Trayvon Martin incident happened...race was played up BIG time by the media...by the race-baiters...but now that the shooter is black race is being downplayed... downplayed or completely glossed over.

And where pray tell are the race-baiter's BIG mouths now...mouths that were given constant media coverage... constant media platforms...to spew their venom of hate for all to hear...race baiters like Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, and YES, Barack HUSSEIN Obama...race-baiters who were so quick to turn the afore mentioned killings into racial incidents before all else...race-baiters who were screaming insistently when 'white' George Zimmerman killed 'black' teenager Trayvon Martin in self-defense... where are they...and where is their condemnation of 'black' Aaron Alexis the man who before many witnesses cold-bloodily murdered 12 innocent people most of whom were white.

They are nowhere to be heard and NOWHERE to be seen for in today's America...in today's Obamanation...blacks killing whites is excused NO matter the circumstances...excused by saying the crime had NOTHING to do with  race, because the shooter was either mentally ill or a victim of his unfortunate upbringing.  But if any white kills any black...even in self-defense...the 3-ring media circus...the race-baiters...are all over it like hungry wolves ravaging its prey saying over and over that it was all about race and NOTHING but race.

And you know that it's only a matter of time before the media turns the Navy Yard shooter into the victim because he felt his benefits were being withheld...because he was being discriminated against by the military...because he was black.

The race card will trump this brutal act of mass murder...as it seems to do every time black on white crime is reported on...every time since Barack HUSSEIN Obama became president.

YES, mental illness can indeed cause people to do the unthinkable and YES, Alexis was being treated for mental illness but this is most important...even though he was mentally ill and posed a documented danger to others (as witnessed by his arrest record), Alexis was given security clearance to work at the Navy Yard.  Was that allowed because he was black...because he spoke of racial discrimination due to being black.  Has it gotten so bad in our country today that even our military is afraid of a charge of racial discrimination being levied against them that they'll give security clearance to someone they know should NOT be given security clearance...it sure seems that way.

And 12 innocent people are dead but Aaron Alexis will soon become the poor innocent victim if the media has its way.  The media will excuse his act of violence because of his mental illness...because he was black.

Well there goes the just started racial healing right out the door...right out the door so soon after the Trayvon Martin fiasco...but that's what the likes of Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, and Barack HUSSEIN Obama want because without their race-baiting what else do they have.
