Obama's Cash for Universal Preschool Clunkers
Michelle Malkin/ Townhall Columnist

It's elementary: When Democrats find themselves in political trouble, they reach for your wallets. After squandering billions on an ineffectual stimulus, failed green energy boondoggles and the disastrous Unaffordable Care Act, the Obama White House wants to dump $75 billion more into "free" preschool for all. That'll solve everything.

Government-funded universal pre-K is a moldy oldie of the progressive left, recycled perennially by Democratic presidential speechwriters in need of State of the Union address padding. But this time, the Fed Ed crowd is redoubling its efforts with support from big-business statists and academic shills.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, once a bitter campaign target of the White House, is now Team Obama's biggest cheerleader on expanding preschool funding. And Austan Goolsbee, a former top Obama economic adviser and University of Chicago prof, took to the pages of The Wall Street Journal this week to crusade for more public "investments" in early childhood education. At "$10,000 per child," Goolsbee argued, universal pre-K is a "bargain."

Why anyone would take the financial advice of Austan Goolsbee is beyond me. I'll remind you that this is the same Austan Goolsbee who vigorously championed extending credit to the uncreditworthy.

In a 2007 op-ed for The New York Times, he derided prescient critics who called subprime mortgages "irresponsible." Goolsbee instead preferred to describe the doomed financial instruments as "innovations in the mortgage market" to expand the pool of homebuyers. We don't need economics Ph.D.'s to see how that worked out.

Goolsbee, like his Fed Ed allies on both the left and right, cites the well-worn Perry Preschool Project in Michigan to support Obama's top-down push for subsidizing preschool for all. But that pilot program, run at a cost of $19,000 per child, took place more than a half-century ago. A more comprehensive and updated review of the literature by the Brookings Institution's Russ Whitehurst released last month found that the vaunted academic benefits of full-time pre-K are, in fact, negligible.

Whitehurst is a developmental psychologist by training who has spent the majority of his career designing and evaluating programs intended to enhance the cognitive development of young children.

He warns that universal preschool boosters "ignore research showing negative impacts on children who receive child care supported through the federal child development block grant program."

Moreover, his research shows, the Nanny Staters have downplayed evidence that "the universal pre-k programs in Georgia and Oklahoma, which are closest to what the Obama administration has proposed, have had, at best, only small impacts on later academic achievement."

A. Barton Hinkle of the Richmond Times-Dispatch points to even more reason for skepticism by way of a 2010 Department of Health and Human Services report about a congressionally mandated study of approximately 5,000 3- and 4-year-olds who were randomly assigned to either a control group or a group that had access to the federal Head Start program. It found that "at the end of kindergarten and first grade ... the Head Start children and the control group children were at the same level on many of the measures studied."

Let's set all of this junk science aside for the moment. There's a bigger elephant in the room. As I've pointed out for years, these cradle-to-grave government education/day care services encourage drive-through, drop-off parenting. Subsidizing this phenomenon cheats children, undermines family responsibilities and breeds resentment among childless workers who are forced to pay for costly social services.

The nationalized preschool promoters, led by feckless bureaucrats who piled mounds of debt onto our children with endless Keynesian pipe dreams, claim that new multibillion-dollar "investments" in public education will "benefit the economy." But ultimately, it's not about the money or improved academic outcomes for Fed Ed. The increasing federal encroachment into our children's lives at younger and younger ages is about control. These clunkers don't need more time and authority over our families. They need a permanent recess.

Despite all the fighting over the Keystone Pipeline, it is now getting some use. Oil is now being pumped into the pipeline’s southern leg, which stretches across Oklahoma to the Texas coast.
“TransCanada is pleased to confirm that at approximately 10:04 am Central Time on Saturday, December 7, 2013, the company began to inject oil into the Gulf Coast Project pipeline as it moves closer to the start of commercial service,” TransCanada spokesman Shawn Howard said in an email, according to The Houston Chronicle.
TransCanada is the developer for the pipeline. The company intends to fill the pipeline in the next few weeks with three million barrels of oil, the report says.
Unfortunately, the pipeline still isn’t able to do what it was intended to because President Obama still hasn’t approved the northern leg, which goes from Canada into the U.S.

Until Obama approves this, the energy industry waits to make major moves to help the American people. He is expected to decide on the fate of the pipeline by the end of March.
Early Tuesday evening, Senate Budget committee chairman Patty Murray (D-WA) and House Budget Committee chairman Paul Ryan (R-WI) announced a new two-year compromise budgetary agreement. The agreement was released ahead of the December 13 deadline and is intended to avoid another government shutdown in January.
“I’m proud of this agreement,” said Chairman Ryan. “It reduces the deficit—without raising taxes. And it cuts spending in a smarter way. It’s a firm step in the right direction, and I ask all my colleagues in the House to support it.”
“This agreement breaks through the recent dysfunction to prevent another government shutdown and roll back sequestration’s cuts to defense and domestic investments in a balanced way,” said Chairman Murray. “It’s a good step in the right direction that can hopefully rebuild some trust and serve as a foundation for continued bipartisan work.”
Reactions to the budget agreement were decidedly mixed. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) released a statement calling the budget a continuation of Washington's "irresponsible" decisions, and said that Americans deserve better. President Obama referred to the deal as a "good first step."

Obama referred to the deal as a "good first step."

John Podesta
A senior progressive strategist and former chief of staff for President Bill Clinton who specializes in the use of executive authority to bypass Congress is reportedly joining the White House.
The New York Times is reporting John Podesta, founder of the Center for American Progress, has agreed to serve as counselor to President Obama for a year.
Podesta last month announced the establishment of a new group, the Washington Center for Equitable Growth, that will work within his Center for American Progress. The new center bills itself as a research and grant-making organization founded to accelerate the closing of what it calls the income gap in the U.S. by fighting so-called income inequality.
The Times reported Podesta will help the White House on “matters related to the health care law, administration organization and executive actions,” with particular focus on so-called climate change issues, according to a person familiar with the plans.
Podesta is a long-time champion of the use of executive powers, including bypassing the legislative branch to enact progressive change.
“Impeachable Offenses: The Case to Remove Barack Obama from Office” is available, autographed, at WND’s Superstore
In November 2010, he co-authored a 48-page Center for American Progress paper titled “The Power of the President: Recommendations to Advance Progressive Change.”
“The U.S. Constitution and the laws of our nation grant the president significant authority to make and implement policy,” wrote Podesta in the paper’s introduction.
“These authorities can be used to ensure positive progress on many of the key issues facing the country through executive orders, rulemaking, agency management, convening and creating public-private partnerships, commanding the armed forces … diplomacy.”
Podesta stressed: “The ability of President Obama to accomplish important change through these powers should not be underestimated.”
In a conference call to reporters after the release of the paper on executive authority, Podesta recalled that after Democrats lost control of Congress in 1994, President Clinton utilized his executive privileges to enact progressive change without the help of Congress.
Podesta’s paper details how Obama can push executive change on a host of issues.
The paper states that on energy and environmental arena, the president can:
  • Reduce oil imports and make progress toward energy independence.
  • Progress toward reducing greenhouse gas pollution by 17 percent by 2020.
  • Conserve federal lands for future generations.
  • Manage public lands to support a balanced energy strategy.
  • Convene and engage hunters and anglers in the development of a fish and wildlife climate adaptation plan.
  • Generate solar energy on U.S. Air Force hangar roofs. On the domestic economic policy front, Podesta usges Obama to:
  • Direct an assessment, strategy, and new policy development to promote U.S. competitiveness.
  • Launch the new consumer financial protection bureau with an aggressive agenda to protect and empower consumers.
  • Increase the capacity of small businesses to expand hiring and purchases by accelerating the implementation of the Small Business Jobs Act.
  • Promote automatic mediation to avoid foreclosure where possible and speed resolution.
  • Create a Web portal to empower housing counselors, reduce burdens on lenders and speed up home mortgage modifications.
  • Help stabilize home values and communities by turning “shadow REO” housing inventory into “scattered site” rental housing.
  • Promote practices that support working families.
On the domestic policy front, Podesta’s paper recommends that Obama:
  • Partner with the private sector in health care payment reform.
  • Focus on health care prevention in implementing the Affordable Care Act.
  • Streamline and simplify access to federal antipoverty programs.
  • Replace costly, inhumane immigration detention policies with equally effective measures.
Regarding education policy, the paper states the president can:
  • Launch an “educational productivity” initiative to help school districts spend every dollar wisely to best prepare our children for the 21st century.
  • Ensure students can compare financial aid offers from different postsecondary institutions.
  • Improve the quality, standards and productivity of postsecondary education.
With regard to “improving the performance of the federal government,” the president can:
  • Scrutinize federal spending programs and tax expenditures to achieve greater returns on public investment.
  • Build the next-generation Recovery.gov website to track all public expenditures and performance in real time.
  • Use new information technology for faster, more transparent freedom of information.
  • Create a virtual U.S. statistical agency.
  • Collect data on lesbian ,gay, bisexual and transgender Americans in federal data surveys.
And in the foreign policy and national security arena, the president and his administration can:
  • Rebalance Afghanistan strategy with greater emphasis on political and diplomatic progress.
  • Promote domestic revenue generation in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
  • Appoint a special envoy for the Horn of Africa and the southwest Arabian Peninsula region.
  • Appoint a special commission to assess contracting practices in national security and foreign affairs.
  • Redouble support for Palestinian state- and institution-building efforts.
  • Pursue dual-track policy on Iran while sharpening focus on Iranian human rights issues.
  • Reinvigorate the U.S.-Turkey strategic alliance. Develop a comprehensive policy on the Russia-Georgia conflict.
In 2008, Podesta served as co-director of Obama’s transition into the White House.
A Time magazine article profiled the influence of Podesta’s Center for American Progress in the formation of the Obama administration, stating that “not since the Heritage Foundation helped guide Ronald Reagan’s transition in 1981 has a single outside group held so much sway.”
The center is funded by billionaire George Soros. Its board includes Van Jones, Obama’s former “green jobs” czar, who resigned in September 2009 after it was exposed he founded a communist revolutionary organization.

Obama And Mandela: A Lot More Than Little White Lies

by   / Personal Liberty Digest

Obama And Mandela: A Lot More Than Little White Lies
UPI FILE
“If there is a country that has committed unspeakable atrocities in the world, it is the United States of America.” — Nelson Mandela, Jan. 29, 2003

Nelson Mandela, the former terrorist-turned-compromiser and the so-called “father of democracy” who served as president of South Africa, hated America. But progressive liberals loved him — none more so than President Barack Obama, who ordered that flags at the White House and all Federal buildings fly at half-staff through Monday, following Mandela’s death last Thursday at age 95. But that was only the start.

Obama, like so many black celebrities and members of the white media, has personalized his relationship with Mandela beyond all reason: “He no longer belongs to us; he belongs to the ages,” Obama said upon learning of Mandela’s death. The President added, “We will not likely see the likes of Nelson Mandela again.”

I have no doubt about that last statement. Can you think of another terrorist bent on killing and overthrowing a government with bombs and armed insurrection who went on to be considered the greatest statesman ever? And just in case you think that Mandela was never a terrorist but a misunderstood man walking in the steps of Mahatma Gandhi, then you are at odds with Washington.

He was on the terrorist list until 2008.

No doubt, South Africans were upset when Mandela tried to blow up a hospital in the early 1960s.

The difference between Mandela then and Timothy McVeigh, who blew up the Federal Building in Oklahoma City on April 19, 1995, is that McVeigh was a deadlier terrorist. Later in life, Mandela did say that he was glad he was caught and did not kill all those innocent sick people. Millions of people find it heartwarming that Mandela had a change of heart.

Check one for sainthood!

In the 1980s, when the Government of South Africa said that Mandela could walk out of jail a free man if he would simply renounce violence as a means to black majority rule, the great leader said no.

Apparently, his wife Winnie Mandela was too happy necklacing her black opponents with tires filled with gasoline for her husband to make a false promise.

Check two for sainthood!

Then there is the fact that Mandela is now celebrated as the greatest human being of the modern era, perhaps any era. Larry King said on CNN that he knows of no greater person who lived in the 20th century than Mandela. Apparently, King has forgotten a lot of people.

But my favorite shout-out comes from Peter Oborne, who wrote last Friday for The Telegraph:
There are very few human beings who can be compared to Jesus Christ. Nelson Mandela is one. This is because he was a spiritual leader as much as a statesman. His colossal moral strength enabled him to embark on new and unimaginable forms of action. He could lead through the strength of example alone.
Check three for sainthood!

That makes two human beings who I have heard compared to Christ: Mandela and Obama. (After all, Oprah Winfrey called Obama the “chosen one.”)

What do both men have in common? Their roots are African. And, beneath all that gloss, polish and hype, Mandela was what Obama remains: a die-hard Marxist.

Dying To Be Seen By Obama

After Obama was snubbed last summer by a then-ill Mandela, the President and the first lady were a spectacle at services for Mandela, fueling the flames of the debate over who loved Mandela more: Bill and Hillary Clinton or Barack and Michelle Obama? It was practically a repeat of three weeks ago, when the Clintons and the Obamas were almost wrestling over the eternal flame torch at the burial site of John F. Kennedy upon the 50-year anniversary of his assassination.

World leaders flew in from all corners of the world to prove they also loved Saint Nelson, despite his past proclivity for violent revolution and his enduring friendships with the late Moammar Gadhafi and Fidel Castro.

It is reality TV, the “I Loved Nelson Mandela The Most Show.” And the Big Three networks, plus CNN and MSNBC, all want to win. Thus they present a Mandela love fest (which began last Thursday and may last until his burial on Dec. 15), detailing how he single-handedly sowed the seeds that brought peace, democracy and prosperity to South Africa.

But what is the truth about Mandela?

I believe he was a changed man, a nonviolent man, by the time he was released from prison in 1990. I also believe that without him, South Africa would have disintegrated the way Rhodesia did — with mass killings and an immediate government takeover of white property. Instead, the property takeover in South Africa has happened over a decade and will probably accelerate now that Mandela is gone.

That said, no man was a greater savior to his country against oppression than Lech Wałęsa, the co-founder of Solidarity in Poland and a political prisoner under martial law imposed at the behest of the Kremlin. Wałęsa probably did more to tear down the Iron Curtain than any person, and he helped give Poland and the rest of Eastern Europe its first independence since Vladimir Lenin enslaved hundreds of millions of people.

What will happen when Wałęsa, the former President of Poland, dies? At best, he might get a mention at the bottom of Page 1 in The New York Times.  There will be no flags at half-staff; neither will there be hour upon hour of specials on his life. No past or present American Presidents will speak of Wałęsa’s greatness and attend his memorial service.

But what are the core differences between Wałęsa and Mandela? One fought for democracy through peaceful means. The other used violence in an attempt to overthrow a white government and was a lifelong Marxist. One was a playwright. The other, even in old age, raised a clenched fist as a symbol of black power.

But the biggest difference is that Wałęsa is white and Mandela was black.

Kerry needs to listen to what Hamas and other groups are saying in Arabic

From Jihad Watch / Posted by Robert Spencer

Fantasy-based policymaking reigns supreme in Washington. "Why Isn't Kerry Listening to What the Radicals Are Saying?," by Khaled Abu Toameh at the Gatestone Institute, December 10:
As U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry pursues his efforts to reach a peace agreement between the Palestinian Authority [PA] leadership and Israel, Hamas reaffirmed that it would not honor any deal that does not meet its goals.
The Hamas announcement serves as a reminder that any US-brokered deal between Israel and the PA will not mean the end of the conflict.
In fact, PA President Mahmoud Abbas is not in a position to sign any document that calls for an end to the conflict with Israel.
Abbas has no control over the Gaza Strip, which has been under the rule of Hamas since the summer of 2007. Any agreement he signs with Israel would only apply to those areas under the control of the PA, in the West Bank or territories handed over to him by Israel.
Hamas is not the only Palestinian party that would reject any U.S.-sponsored agreement.
Most of the PLO groups, including the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine, have already expressed their opposition to the Israeli-Palestinian peace talks.
This is in addition to other radical Palestinian groups that do not belong to the PLO, first and foremost Islamic Jihad.
"The Palestinians are not bound by any agreement that results from the current negotiations [between Israel and the PA] and which harm Palestinian rights," said
Hamas's top leader in the Gaza Strip, Mahmoud Zahar. "The Palestinian negotiators have no legitimacy and are not authorized to speak on behalf of the Palestinians."
Zahar claimed that Abbas and his Fatah faction were negotiating with Israel only because of American pressure and to ensure continued Western funding for the Palestinian Authority.
Even senior Fatah officials seem to agree with Zahar's assessment. Over the past few months, some of these officials, such as Sufian Abu Zaida, Hussam Khader and Mohammed Dahlan, have not hesitated to come out in public against the peace talks and any future agreement with Israel.
Given Hamas' announcement that it would not honor or recognize any deal signed between the PA and Israel, Kerry needs to take into account that any peace agreement will not put an end to the conflict....

Op-ed:
The pictures say it all*
By: Diane Sori

As the saying goes, ‘Sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words’ and in the case of Barack HUSSEIN Obama…America’s most narcissistic of presidents…there are many pictures to speak many words…and those words are all so NOT good.

But first a little history and presidential protocol. Simply, America does not recognize royalty or social rank, and when our president interacts with foreign leaders he is representing our country, ‘We the People', and our Constitution.

This means that when Barack HUSSEIN Obama in his capacity as president bows to a foreign leader…does the so-called ‘bro-handshake’ with a Communist dictator…hugs a Communist leader…he is representing us and thus we are doing these things right along with him.

And while technically it’s NOT even right for an American president to bow to the Queen of England or the Emperor of Japan ...but being that England, Japan, and the US are the staunchest of allies it can be somewhat overlooked...but when an American president…as in Barack HUSSEIN Obama…does these things with dictators… does these things with America’s enemies…does these things with Communist thugs who share none of America’s values, virtues, or ideals…he does this on behalf of us all.

And that should have every one of you hopping mad for America bows to NO one.

Bowing, hugging, and ’bro-handshakes' of any kind done...and all done with a big smile on his face...before or with foreign leaders who are NOT America's friends…done before or with communist dictators…shows a lack of respect to America and an internal weakness of the American people in allowing this president to continue to do this.

The simple fact is right now America NO longer leads…sadly our number one super power status has been overtaken by Vladimir Putin’s Russia (and by a man who bows to NO one)…for with Barack HUSSEIN Obama at America’s helm catering and bowing to the enemy has become the norm. Obama believes that all nations should be equal…all leaders on the same plane of power…all answering to his supported and oh so-wanted ‘One World Government’ order.

But I pray that is NOT America’s destiny for that was NOT the goal when America was founded, and last time I looked the Constitution was still the law of this land.

We Americans…especially we American patriots…know what we must do to protect both our Constitution and our way of life as laid down in that very Constitution…and we know we cannot allow Barack HUSSEIN Obama to defame, dishonor, and negate our Constitution any longer as he caters to, condones, and aides America’s enemies in words, pictures, and deeds.

Thomas Jefferson foresaw a man like Barack HUSSEIN Obama someday ascending to the presidency when he said, “Do you want to know who you are? Don’t ask. Act! Action will delineate and define you” and now it’s way passed time for us to heed those wise words.

And as Obama’s actions define who he is our actions must define who we are…or our inactions will be America’s death knell. ‘We the People’ must demand in a united voice that Congress impeach and then arrest this president…a president who bows to our enemies…a president who bro-handshakes with Communist dictators…a president whose every action and every LIE dishonors all America is…a president who said and this is the most grievous of all, “It doesn’t matter since for all intent and purposes the US
Constitution is dead”.

And Congress must NOT back down to a fabricated race card that Barack HUSSEIN Obama and his minions love to pull out as need be to keep those we elected to work for us in line. It’s high passed time to do what we all know needs to be done for three more years of Barack HUSSEIN Obama bowing to our enemies, cavorting with our enemies, embracing our enemies, will indeed become America’s demise.

And like I said at the beginning, ‘Sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words’ but with Barack HUSSEIN Obama I’ll let these but a few of many pictures say it all…tell you all…better than I ever could.

And if these pictures bowing and kowtowing to our enemies are NOT a call to action then I do NOT know what is.
