“The Common Core standards are a critical part of transforming New York’s schools, and the failure to effectively implement them has led to confusion and frustration among students and their families.”Despite his initial optimism surrounding Common Core, however, New York test scores have remained remarkably flat after its implementation:
The second year of state standardized testing on the rigorous Common Core learning standards showed that students made modest gains in math but remained practically flat in English.
Despite another full year of Common Core preparation by schools after the initial rollout of state tests in 2013, there were no dramatic, across-the-board gains in English this year.
Urban and other high-poverty districts saw more year-to-year improvement, but wealthier suburban districts classified as having average or low needs actually saw overall declines. With unusual teaching strategies such as telling students to draw out math problems, Common Core has been deemed controversial for not preparing students for college.
Perhaps this is why New Yorkers are flat out rejecting the
program. GOP gubernatorial candidate Rob Astorino and the state GOP
ticket submitted a Stop Common Core
ballot line petition to further challenge Cuomo in November. In case
you’re wondering how passionate people are about ending the program, 62,000 people have signed their names to the petition. Here’s some pictorial proof.
The unpopularity of Common Core in the Empire State is also apparent in recent polling:
The unpopularity of Common Core in the Empire State is also apparent in recent polling:
When it comes to matters of education policy, according to the poll results, a majority of voters want to see implementation of the Common Core standards stopped rather than continued.
Voters supporting Cuomo want the standards implemented by a 49-38 percent margin, however, Astorino voters are strongly opposed to Common Core being implemented by a 73-17 percent margin," Greenberg said.Thankfully, parents aren’t just signing documents and participating in surveys - they’re taking their children out of this "educational" program. As a result of Common Core failures in other states, homeschooling is becoming a much more attractive option.
I have to say I am ignorant of common core. I looked it up on the web but was somewhat confused by the answer I got.
ReplyDeleteIt said its goal was to have students have a common core of knowledge on which to base their diplomas. OK…can the kid, read, write, and do arithmetic? Having a common base to insure everyone is on the same playing field seems reasonable.
However, it went further than just reading, and writing, and doing arithmetic. It went into some nebulous areas such as mathematical modeling (do elementary kids really need that at that time?)
The article in the Patriot Factor said that urban kids were doing somewhat better, but suburban kids were not doing quite as well. Huh? How is that? One thing that might affect the overall scores would be that our nation is becoming more black and Hispanic (white kids are now the minority.) This WILL affect test scores!
My mother, who is a retired school teacher in Arizona, is dead set against it! This immediately sent up flags in my book; and the fact that it is SO despised also sends up warning flags.
I think the program (from its description on the web) asks too much of kids. For example, mathematical modeling is an advanced mathematical process. Once one has mastered the basics: Algebra, Trig, Geometry, and Calculus, then they can take on modeling! Most of the basics of modeling would be picked by the student by observing the models presented to him in his text; he could then apply the solutions to new problems based on his knowledge of mathematics.
I have to say something that might seem biased and racist, but I don’t think most urban kids can do the most simple mathematical processes much less advanced mathematical modeling, statistics, and probability (which is what common core is supposed to teach.)
So…the article says the urban kids are doing better than suburban kids! I guess any movement at all above rock bottom would be an improvement!
Usually these programs are created to uplift black kids to the level of other kids! These programs do not work. There are indeed some very bright black kids, but on average most blacks cannot compete with Asians and whites because their DNA is not wired that way. Their genes are wired for athletic ability (at least in the case of African-Americans); not cerebral functioning. They were bred to pick fruit and other basic tasks which do not take too much thinking. Nature wired them that way (a bit low on the intellectual scale)!
Once a city becomes mostly African-American, did you ever notice the downward spiral of that city? This has more to do with their intellectual capacity than anything else. Most American blacks have an average IQ of around 85. This lower IQ means they don’t respond to stimuli like a person with a higher IQ would respond.
In their world, the rough robbery of Michael Brown for some cigars was perfectly legit. Most are frankly too dumb to understand good from bad. They are stupid! We need to stop trying to educate and assimilate these people. Give them a ghetto to live in away from civilization.
My final word: stop trying to bring blacks up to white standards in America. The experiment failed. Most do not have the capacity to do work above grade school level! Those who show ability: teach; those who do not show ability: don’t waste your time!
