In the game that is politics one's leadership ability both before and after they're elected to office tends to be tested time and again. And as our great Florida Governor Ron DeSantis took charge of the handling of strong 125mph Cat. 3 Hurricane Idalia...before, during, and after she made landfall near remote Keaton Beach near to the Taylor county town of Perry...former President Donald J. Trump, even when questioned, remained eerily silent about what was going to happen to the state he now calls home...at least some of the time that is. And why the silence...the answer is two-fold. First, Trump considers Ron DeSantis his arch enemy for how dare he run against him for what he believes is the owed to him Republican nomination for president. And second, it's obviously not in Trump's nature to care about anything except that which revolves around him, and this natural disaster took the spotlight off of him and rightfully placed it on Gov. DeSantis...the man, the governor, and more importantly to Trump his main nominee rival.
And Ron DeSantis...who Trump regularly, if not daily, attacks in his Truth Social posts...was wise enough to know how the baiting aspect of the political game is played and would not play along when he refused to call out...to chastise...Trump’s silence over his handling of what was then the fast approaching hurricane. And baited he was when asked, last Wednesday, by a reporter during a televised press conference why Trump had not yet commented, Gov. DeSantis responded by saying that Trump is, “Not my concern. My concern is protecting the people of Florida, being ready to go,” and immediately switched the discourse to talk about hurricane preparation preparedness regarding what could be “life-threatening storm surges.” Detailing that,“In Florida, you just have to do this...this, and this,” and so on down the line, DeSantis has not been asked again about Trump in regards to Hurricane Idalia for he made it clear to all that campaign rhetoric would not become a distraction when Floridian's lives and property were both in danger and at stake.“Don’t mess with this storm.
Don’t do anything that will put yourself in jeopardy,” were
DeSantis' words thus rightfully prioritizing priorities...a sign of a
true and competent leader.
And know that Gov. DeSantis prepared Floridians well...and did so in a time frame that probably saved many lives by his issuing evacuation notices in at least 21 counties in western and central Florida which many wisely heeded...while 46 counties were placed under a state of emergency. He also assured Floridians that, “We are ready for this,” by his informing us that the state government had already staged the Florida National Guard to help where and when help was needed; that 1.2 million emergency gallons of gasoline were readily available and on-hand to power up generators when expected power shortages and outages happened; and that “an overwhelming number of personnel are already on the ground to help restore everybody's power across the board,” and do so in as timely a manner as possible. And most importantly, Gov. Ron DeSantis helped ease our fears in that he made it clear that all-important “search and rescue operations” were indeed “poised and ready to go.”
A leader in action taking command and doing all the right things to ensure that we Floridians come through this natural disaster on the up not downside. DeSantis' pre-active actions taken helped to insure pro-active results which resulted in the loss of life directly from the hurricane standing (as I write this) at zero not unlike that in Maui where their governors actions not taken resulted in 100+ folks having already been confirmed dead with up to a thousand still remaining missing. And while property damage in certain areas of Florida is great, Gov. DeSantis has already declared both a major disaster declaration for the communities that were directly affected by Hurricane Idalia...a declaration which now allows those residents in need different types of aid and recovery assist in, again, a much needed timely manner...as well as his issuing a statement that, "We are not gonna tolerate any looting in the aftermath," adding that signs in yards that say, "You loot, we shoot" should be taken seriously. "People have a right to defend their property." How right our governor is.
More times than not actions taken do resonate louder than words spoken. Governor Ron DeSantis was and still is (as I write this) here in Florida on site. He was here not only when disaster was approaching, but here when it struck, and now he's here in its aftermath to offer any and all help that he can including his hands on, roll up his sleeves, and literally get dirty, help if need be. Florida is where Gov. DeSantis needed to be at that point in time...and Florida is where he rightfully was and still is. DeSantis took control of the looming disaster along with the crisis that followed, and did what needed to be done while saying what needed to be said. And he did so while putting politics and political posturing aside, thus proving himself to be a real leader in times of crisis...something paramount in importance when one is leader of not only this country but of the “Free World” as well.
Joe Biden, on the other hand, when Maui was in crisis... when wildfires and storm flooding devastated the island...spend yet another of his many long weekends on vacation at his Sussex County, Delaware beach home. When bodies were starting to pile up, when the aforementioned hundreds if not a thousand still remain unaccounted for; when the scope of the Maui devastation was finally realized and shown to the world; Joe Biden still remained absent and clocked himself in the usual rhetoric of the uninterested by spewing the words, “NO comment.” And only when forced to visit the island did Biden take a few precious hours away from his vacation time to make a quick trip to Maui where he was no help to the survivors at all. Instead of offering true help and compassion, Biden relegated the islands disaster to be inline with a small kitchen fire of 20 years ago that he said almost killed his cat and could have damaged his Corvette.
Leadership skills and compassion are surely lacking in this one, which really should come as no surprise as Joe Biden has yet to visit the devastated town of Palestine, Ohio where last year's Norfolk-Southern toxic train derailment is still wrecking havoc on the community and its residents.
America desperately needs a leader...a leader with the actual ability to lead...a leader with a cool head during crisis yet who is able to tackle said crisis in a manner so as to get the job done. Gov. Ron DeSantis with both Hurricanes Ian and Idalia has proven himself to have such all-important leadership skills and would easily help to right America's now sinking ship of state. Joe Biden can't do it...he never could nor would his handlers ever allow him to do it. And former President Donald “It's All About Me” Trump now and in the future will remain too wrapped up in “revenge politics” to even care about actually leading. Only one person...one man...has at this point in time proven to posses this much needed skill and that man is Florida Governor Ron DeSantis... prove me wrong if you can...bet you can't.
