Americans' distrust of Obama birth story rises

MIT professor's poll shows 'birthers aren't going anywhere'

121004obama

“The birthers aren’t going anywhere!”
So concludes MIT political science professor Adam J. Berinsky, who published Monday results from a YouGov survey of 1,000 Americans who were asked whether they believed Barack Obama was born in the United States.

According to the scientific poll, 73 percent of self-identified Republicans and 40 percent overall are either don’t believe Obama was born in the U.S. or are not sure.

For both Republicans and Americans overall, belief that Obama is foreign-born was at a high point in September, just 37 days before the Nov. 6 presidential election.

As seen in Table 1 for the full sample and in Table 2 for Republicans only, Berinsky’s conclusions were clear: The percentage of people who think Obama was not born in the United States has held steady throughout the year and perhaps even increased slightly.

“Birtherism is especially pronounced among Republicans,” Berinsky wrote. “Indeed, the level of birtherism among Republicans is the highest it has been this year.”

Table 1: Adam Berinsky birther study: full sample

Table 2: Adam Berinsky birther study: Republicans only

Writing in February, Berinsky noted Obama, since assuming the presidency, had been plagued by rumors that he is not a natural-born citizen and, as a result, is not eligible to serve as president under Article 2, Section 1 of the Constitution.

“These rumors have shown a surprising resilience over the last four years,” Berinsky wrote. “In fact, polls conducted by numerous media organizations repeatedly demonstrated that a significant portion of the American public claimed that Obama was not born in the United States, while many others are not sure if he was.”

Berinsky noted the doubts about where Obama was born have persisted even after the White House released a computer PDF copy of Obama’s long-form birth certificate on April 27, 2011.

“Time and again, the Obama team tried to dispel the “birther” rumor,” he observed.

“During the 2008 presidential contest, Obama released a computer copy of his birth certificate on a campaign website, but it did not quell the controversy. In 2009, Dr. Chiyome Fukino, the director of the Hawaii State Department of Health, verified that Obama was born in Hawaii and is a natural-born citizen. But still the rumors would not die.”

In July, Berinsky reported 20 percent of independent voters believe Obama is not a native born citizen, allowing him to conclude that birtherism “is not strictly a condition of the Republican Party.”

  1. Somewhere between 25% and 50% of Americans believe in ghosts. Their belief does not show that there are ghosts.

Obama was born in Hawaii as his birth certificate from Hawaii and the confirmation of the officials of both parties (including the former Republican governor) and the Index Data file and the birth notices sent to the papers by the DOH of Hawaii in 1961 all show.

And the US Supreme Court ruled in the Wong Kim Ark case that every child born in the USA except for the children of foreign diplomats is a Natural Born Citizen.

    1. I don't believe for a minute that he was born in Hawaii nor do I believe his daddy is Barack HUSSEIN Obama, Sr. is his father. And the experts all agree as they all say the birth certificate he put out on the White House web page is a FRAUD. Show me a REAL birth certificate and maybe I and millions of others will believe where he was born.

    2. Only birther "experts"---who have not proved that they are really experts, and who certainly have not proved that they are fair and impartial say that there is anything wrong with the image of Obama's birth certificate.

The birther "experts" include Paul Irey, who has repeatedly claimed that Obama did not attend Columbia College, despite the fact that Columbia University has stated that Obama did attend (and that he graduated). And they include Doug Vogt, who claims to have found the original altar of Abraham. It is such "experts" as these that the birthers rely on for their case.

There are many real experts who say that there is nothing wrong with Obama's birth certificate, including John Woodman, who happens to be a member of the Tea Party and who dislikes Obama and Obama's policies, but shows that the birther "experts" are wrong. They also include Ivan Zatkovich, who was hired by WND to examine the image of Obama's birth certificate, and when he submitted his report that there was nothing wrong with Obama's birth certificate, WND simply did not publish it.

It is clear that rational conservatives do not believe the "birth certificate was forged" claims. Ann Coulter, Glenn Beck and the National Review certainly do not.

And the conservative secretary of state of Arizona asked Hawaii to confirm that Obama was born there and to confirm specified facts on Obama's birth certificate. Hawaii did, stating that it compared the image of Obama's birth certificate with the file copy (which is an additional confirmation that there was a file copy BTW) and that Obama was born there and that the facts match. The secretary of state of Arizona accepted this confirmation and ruled that Obama will be on the ballot in Arizona in November. This indicates that he does not believe the claims that the birth certificate is forged (including those of Sheriff Joe) and that he does believe the officials in Hawaii.

    3. Continuing:

Remember that the officials of BOTH parties including the former Republican governor of Hawaii (now running for the US Senate) have confirmed that there is a birth certificate in the files for Obama, and that they sent both the short form and the long-form birth certificate to Obama, and that the facts on Obama's long form birth certificate are EXACTLY the same as on the birth certificate in the files.

The first proof that Obama's birth certificate exists in Hawaii and that it says that he was born in Hawaii is the short form birth certificate. That was created by a clerk copying the information off of the original document in the files. If there were no document, there could be no short form birth certificate. If it did not say that his place of birth was Honolulu, it could not say Place of birth Honolulu on it.

The second reason for knowing that there is a birth certificate in the files is that Hawaii said that there is, several times, under both Republican and Democrat governors.

The third reason was that the current director of health of Hawaii stated in a letter that she had seen the long form birth certificate being created by photocopying onto security paper the original document that was in the files.

The fourth reason is that the existence of Obama's birth certificate in 1961 is proven by the birth notices sent to the newspapers of Hawaii in 1961 by the DOH of Hawaii. Only the DOH could send those notices to the Health Bureau Statistics section of the papers, and the DOH sent only sent those notices for children whom it had issued birth certificates for.

And, of course, Hawaii is thousands of miles from the nearest foreign country, and Obama's Kenyan relatives actually did NOT say that he was born in Kenya. They said repeatedly that he was born in Hawaii. The birther site simply did not quote Obama's Kenyan grandmother who said that. And she said in another interview that the first that her family in Kenya had heard of Obama's birth was in a letter from Hawaii.

Would you like me to post the citations of the confirmations by the officials in Hawaii?

    4. NO need to for 3 main reasons you've overlooked that prove the birth certificate is a phony:

      1. the hospital on his birth certificate did NOT go by the name listed on the birth certificate until almost 10 years AFTER he was supposedly born there.

2, In 1961 ALL across America the word African-American did NOT even exist. Children born black were listed as Negro or negroid. Obama's certificate lists him as African-American.

3, In 1961, children did NOT have to be born in Hawaii proper to be listed as being born there and anyone can send a notice to a newspaper, which means nothing. Look it up and you'll see I'm right.

Obama's birth certificate is as phony as a three dollar bill!

  2. Dear Diane:

    1) The name of the hospital on his birth certificate is Kapiolani Maternity and Gynecological Hospital. That was the name on birth certificates posted on WND's site of the Nordyke Twins, who were born one day after Obama was born: http://www.wnd.com/2009/07/105347/

In short the claim that the hospital did not exist or that its name was not Kapiolani Maternity and Gynecological Hospital is nutty. Who told it to you?

    2. The word on Obama's birth certificate that describes the race of his father is not "African-American" but only "African."

What explains that word? Two things. First Hawaii did not have a list of words that you could use to describe your race. You could use any word that you wanted. Some people actually used the word "American"---which is not a race---to describe their race, and Hawaii allowed it. Others have said that their parents used the word "Italian"---which is not a race either, and that Hawaii allowed it. Hawaii has confirmed that it allowed people to use any word that they wanted to describe their race.

And what was the word that African exchange students normally used to describe their race in 1961? Answer: AFRICAN. And what was the word used in Kenya when it was a colony (which was in 1961) to describe the race of the residents who were black? Answer: AFRICAN.

Re: 3. There is no proof, and never has been to your claims that Hawaii allowed a person not born in Hawaii to be listed as being born there, and Hawaii (BOTH political parties) has constantly denied it. It is certainly untrue that anyone could send a birth notice to the section of the newspaper called "Health Bureau Statistics"---which is where Obama's birth notice appeared. Only the Health Bureau, the department of health, could do that (which has been confirmed by the papers and by the DOH), and in 1961 the DOH only sent out the birth notices for people born in Hawaii.

Re Obama's birth certificate being "phoney"---only birther "experts" have claimed that. The officials of both parties in Hawaii have repeatedly confirmed that there is a birth certificate for Obama, that it says on it that he was born in Kapiolani Hospital in Honolulu, and that they sent both the short form and the long form birth certificate to Obama. This is further confirmed by the Index Data file, a public file that shows what birth certificates that are on file, which shows one for Obama listed under 1961. And it is further confirmed by the birth notices sent to the papers by the DOH of Hawaii in 1961.

Hawaii is still thousands of miles from the nearest foreign country, and the idea that Obama's mother traveled those thousands of miles (much less tens of thousands to Kenya) all alone (since WND has proved with a FOI Act request that Obama's father stayed in Hawaii throughout the year) is not very rational.

    1. I have Googled everything that you said, and you are wrong on all points.

If you feel that Obama is a traitor, you have the right to vote against him. But that is all. He was born in the USA, in Hawaii, at Kapiolani Maternity and Gynecological Hospital, which BTW did exist at the time http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kapiolani_Medical_Center_for_Women_and_Children

Notice that it says that the name was changed from Kapiolani Maternity Home in 1931. Notice also that there is no mention of the name Kapiolani Maternity and Gynecological Hospital changing again until its name was changed to Kapiolani Hospital in 1971. Notice also that it says that Obama was born there.

Obama's long form birth certificate, which has been confirmed by the officials of both parties in Hawaii, says that Obama was born at Kapiolani Hospital, which WND has proved did exist in 1961 by showing the birth certificates of the Nordyke twins, who were born at that hospital on August 5, 1961.

Obama has a birth certificate from Hawaii, confirmed by the officials of both parties, and further confirmed by the birth notices that were sent to the newspapers in 1961 by the DOH of Hawaii. Hawaii is still thousands of miles from the nearest foreign country, and the idea that Obama's mother traveled those thousands of miles (much less tens of thousands to Kenya) all alone (since WND has proved with a FOI Act request that Obama's father stayed in Hawaii throughout the year) is far from rational.

    3. "Whatever" is not proof that Obama was born in a foreign country.

Here is the first of the confirmations by the officials in Hawaii.

      http://www.kitv.com/r/17860890/detail.html

Notice where it says that there is an original birth certificate filed. Well, in 1961 foreign birth certificates, even those from other states, could not be filed in Hawaii. So the birth certificate in Obama’s files must be a Hawaii birth certificate.

Here is the second of the confirmations by the officials in Hawaii.

      http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2009-07-27-obama-hawaii_N.htm

Notice where it says that the document in the files VERIFIES that Obama was born in Hawaii. So, not only is there an official Hawaiian birth certificate in the files, but it says right on it that Obama was born in Hawaii. Hawaii has never allowed the Department of Health to issue a birth document of any kind that says on it that anyone was born in Hawaii unless there was proof that the child was born in Hawaii, and that is what the officials in Hawaii have confirmed twice.

And here is the confirmation by the former governor of Hawaii, Linda Lingle, a Republican, that says that Obama was born in Hawaii, in Kapiolani Hospital

      http://voices.washingtonpost.com/right-now/2010/05/hawaii_gov_lingle_answers_the.html

And here is the statement of a witness who recalls being told of Obama’s birth in Hawaii, in Kapiolani Hospital, in 1961:

      http://www.buffalonews.com/incoming/article137495.ece

Here are the birth notices of Obama's birth in the Hawaii newspapers in 1961.

(Some few of the above have been moved within their sites so that they cannot be accessed by the pages I have cited, but they exist and can be found by searching. I simply haven't substituted the new pages on the list I saved.)

The above are merely the old confirmations. The latest one, the one that convinced the secretary of state of Arizona is this:

      http://www.obamaconspiracy.org/2012/05/bennett-satisfied-birthers-cry-foul/

The proof that Kenya investigated the claim that Obama was born there and found it false is contained in the following quotation and citation:

      washingtonindependent.com/.../...

The fact that only 21 people came to the USA from Kenya in 1961 and only seven of them were US citizens and only one person came to the USA from Kenya by air is contained in this INS document:

  3. "Whatever" is not proof that Obama was born in a foreign country.

Obama has shown his birth certificate twice—short-form and long-form—and the officials in Hawaii of both political parties have confirmed the facts on it, and they are further confirmed by the Index Data (a public file showing the birth certificates that are on file that shows one for Obama under 1961) and by the birth notices in the Health Bureau Statistics section of two newspapers in Hawaii that were sent to the newspapers by the DOH of Hawaii (and only by the DOH of Hawaii, and the DOH only sent those notices for births in Hawaii).

    1. Again, the laws in 1961 Hawaii were different than they are now and anyone could place an announcement in their newspapers back then. I will waste NO more time discussing this issue, especially with an Obama supporter. Take this elsewhere all you want but I'm done.

    2. The name of the section of the newspaper in which the birth notices was placed was "Health Bureau Statistics." As the name indicates, and as both the papers and the DOH have confirmed, only the DOH could place notices in the "Health Bureau Statistics" section of the papers.

Repeat, no birth notice ads were accepted at the time. Repeat, no one other than the DOH could put notices into that section.

And in 1961 the DOH only sent out those birth notices for births that had occurred in Hawaii.

I'm sorry you do not want to spend your valuable time discussing the facts. Still, they are indeed the facts. You may not wish to discuss them, but the facts are that Obama has shown both his short form and his long form birth certificate, and officials of BOTH parties in Hawaii have confirmed the facts on it, and its existence is further confirmed by the public Index Data file, and the fact that it was issued in 1961 is further confirmed by the birth notices that were in the newspapers, which appeared in the Health Bureau Statistics section of the papers, and only the DOH could put those notices into that section of the papers.

As for being an Obama supporter, the fact that only the DOH could put notices into the Health Bureau Statistics section of the paper will remain a fact regardless of who says it. Obama supporter, Obama hater, only the DOH could put birth notices into the Health Bureau Statistics section.

IF a child were born in Kenya or for that matter in any other country than in the USA she or he would need a US travel document to get to the USA. We simply do not allow a child to be carried into the USA without some form of official document. (Except some are smuggled across the Mexican and Canadian borders, but Kenya does not have a land border with the USA and Hawaii does not have land borders with any foreign country.)

And a US travel document, such as having Obama added to his mother's US passport would have required an application for that document in the foreign country.

That application would have been filed in multiple files, and there would have been communication about it with Washington, so it would be difficult to be lost or scrapped. And the Bush Administration was in charge of the US State Department for eight years until early 2009, so they could have found it, and if they did they would surely have shown it, and they didn't.

So, for a the story "not born in the USA" to be true, the Bush Administration must be part of a plot. Hawaii too, of course, and that would include the former Republican governor of Hawaii, now running for the US Senate. And the birth notices in the Hawaii newspapers that were placed by the DOH in the Hawaii newspapers (and only the DOH could put notices into the Health Bureau Statistics section of the papers) in 1961 would have to be fraudulent too.

And, heck, Kenya is about ten thousand miles from Hawaii, and Hawaii is in fact thousands of miles from ANY foreign country, and the idea that Obama's parents had that kind of money or would spend it on a trip while Obama's mother was late in pregnancy (which was very rare in those days) and take the risk of stillbirth is nutty in the extreme.

The bottom line: There is no proof that Obama's mother traveled outside the USA, and it is highly unlikely that she did. The Kenyan government and Obama's relatives both say that he was not born there. If he were born in Kenya or in any foreign country, there would have to be US government documents saying that his family applied for a passport or a visa, and there isn't any. There is no INS check in for Obama or his mother (which would normally have taken place in New York, since there were no direct flights, and those files are not missing), and the birth certificate and the confirmation of the officials of both parties and the Index Data and the birth notices in the Hawaii newspapers all show that he was born in Hawaii.

And BTW, since you insist on hiding behind the moniker of 'anonymous' and a silhouette icon whatever you say has NO credence because you do NOT have the courage to stand by your convictions by showing your face or giving your name.

  4. Re "anonymous." It is precisely because I want the discussion to focus on the facts that I do not post my name. Opinions naturally change with the person. But facts remain the same. Regardless of whether my name were Smith or Jones, the Earth is round and 2+2=4.

The same applies to the facts that Hawaii has issued a birth certificate for Obama and the officials of both parties confirmed the facts on it, and they are further confirmed by the Index Data.

    http://www.cleveland.com/nation/index.ssf/2011/04/in_hawaii_its_easy_to_get_birt.htm

And the fact that a Hawaii birth certificate was issued for Obama in 1961 is further confirmed by the birth notices in the "Health Bureau Statistics" sections of the newspapers. And at the time only the DOH of Hawaii could send notices to the "Health Bureau Statistics" sections of the newspapers (as the name indicates, and as confirmed both by the DOH and the paper).

    http://whatreallyhappened.com/WRHARTICLES/obamabirth.php

(Click on the paper to get a close-up view). Notice that all the birth notices are in exactly the same format" Name of parents, address, son or daughter, date. That is the way that government notices work, not the way that ads work. Not one birth notice is in any other format. ALL of them come from the same place, the department of health. And in 1961 it only sent out those birth notices for births in Hawaii.

Moreover, a little common sense. Hawaii is thousands of miles away from the nearest foreign country, and pregnant women rarely traveled long distances when they were late in pregnancy in those days. IF a child were born in a foreign country, she or he would have to be added to the mother's US passport or receive a US visa before being allowed to enter the USA---and no such document has been found.

    2. Here, again, are the facts:

Recently the Conservative secretary of state of Arizona asked Hawaii to confirm that Obama was born there and to confirm other facts on his published birth certificate. Hawaii did, and the Conservative secretary of state of Arizona accepted it as evidence that Obama was born in Hawaii, and ruled that Obama will be on the ballot in Arizona in November.

Obama’s mother lived in Hawaii. Obama’s father was studying in Hawaii. There is not a shred of evidence that either of them went from Hawaii to any other country in 1961—and certainly not to Kenya, where the Kenyan government said that it checked on the “born in Kenya” claim and found that it was false. Hawaii is thousands of miles from any foreign country, and pregnant women rarely traveled late in pregnancy in those days, and yet birthers apparently think that there could be a chance that Obama was born outside of the USA and that the officials of both parties in Hawaii, and the Index Data, and the birth notices sent to the newspapers by the DOH of Hawaii in 1961—-are all lying about that fact.

The facts are that Obama was born in Hawaii, not Kenya. This is proven by his birth certificate from Hawaii, which has been confirmed by the officials of both parties in Hawaii, and by the Index Data file and by the birth notices in the Hawaii newspapers that were sent to the papers by the DOH of Hawaii in 1961. And the government of Kenya has investigated the "born in Kenya" story and found that it is false.

  8. Re: "NO they have NOT investigated it nor have they proved he was NOT born in Kenya. You lie just like the man you support."

The Kenyan government investigated the “born in Kenya” story, and found that it was not true.

“Jon Chessoni, a first secretary at the Kenyan Embassy in Washington, can’t understand why his office gets so many baseless questions about whether Barack Obama was born in Kenya.

“It’s madness,” said Chessoni on Monday.“His father, in 1961, would not even have been in Kenya. When this matter first came up, the Kenyan government did its research and confirmed that these are all baseless claims.””

More proof: Only 21 people came to the USA from Kenya in 1961, and of them only 7 were US citizens, and although birthers have always claimed that Obama's parents traveled by air, only one person came to the USA by air in 1961 and that one person was, wait for it, not a US citizen.

      Still more proof:

We simply do not allow a child to be carried into the USA without some form of official document. (Except some are smuggled across the Mexican and Canadian borders, but Kenya does not have a land border with the USA.) And the Bush Administration was in charge of the US State Department for eight years until early 2009, so they could have found it, and if they did they would surely have shown it, and they didn't.

In short, the Kenyan government says that he was not born in Kenya. It would be extremely unlikely because only seven US citizens came to the USA from Kenya in 1961, and it would also be unlikely because such a trip was long, expensive and risky during late pregnancy. And there is a birth certificate that shows that he was born in Hawaii.
