Bipartisanship
or Bust

In
the wake of the latest assassination attempt against President Donald
Trump, it has become obvious of just how politically divided America
is today, And said divide is much deeper than just your average
Democrat vs. Republican ideological rhetoric, because it has now
reached a point where some Republicans are as far to the right as
some Democrats are to the left. In fact, at times, the political
discourse of today has now become so heated that the radical right can now
actually shake hands with the radical left, and visa-versa.One
case in point can be summed up by these thirteen words, “America
will not be lectured about civility by far-right extremists in
Congress"...now
is a time to unify.”
These
were the fighting words spoken by House Minority Speaker Hakeem
Jeffries, and were aimed directly at Florida's Governor Ron
DeSantis...words to the affect that Governor DeSantis best dare not
try to redraw Florida's Congressional districts before this
November's midterm election. But spew as he may, these were indeed
foolish words for what Jeffries willingly chose to ignore is the
fact that not only is Virginia's recent redistricting election itself
being contested, but that said election might actually be
unconstitutional in some aspects.
And
to add even more fuel to the fires of political discontentment come
these words.... words
again spewed by Hakeem Jeffries just days before the recent “White
House Correspondents Dinner”
fiasco. And these words actually called for "maximum
warfare" against
Republicans in that Jeffries stated that, “We
(Democrats) are in an era of maximum warfare. Everywhere, all the
time.”
And
foolish man that he is, Jeffries added that the Democrats would
continue to “ratchet
up pressure”
on Republicans nationwide, but he never explained exactly what said
“pressure”
would or might be.
Simply,
America is now in a war against itself...that's how far the political
divide has caused us to stray from out founding principle know as,
“We the People.”
Three little words
seemingly buried in partisan driven hate that sadly shows the world
who we've now become as a nation. And for me that downfall started
the very day a community organizer from Chicago not only sashayed
across the stage to give Bill Clinton's presidential nominating
address, but who set the stage for almost all the problems we
politically and socially face today, and he...Barack Hussein Obama...did so simply by his willingly allowing “bipartisanship”
to become a “dirty
word” so to speak.And
herein now lies the problem, for unseen since the days of the great
Ronald Reagan has “bipartisanship”
been a true and lasting Congressional reality. Why so...because both
Democrats and Republicans now seem to thrive on constantly being at
each others political throats, thus they never allow themselves to
even begin to work together to find common sense solutions to the
shared problems at hand. And in their failing to do so, these folks
willingly ignore the fact that the act of “bipartisanship”
itself can actually help to negate the extreme wings...the overtly
vocal and at times physically dangerous wings...of both the
Republican and Democrat parties.
And
also something to note is that “bipartisanship” does
tend to lead to
overall governmental stability via the implementation of not only
centrist solutions to problems, but accomplishes this while
eliminating the fear of policy reversals occurring simply because the
party in power has once again shifted hands...the very thing that has
allowed round after round of inane partisan bickering to sadly become
the new norm.
In
other words “bipartisanship”
does work best when it's coupled with both parties returning to the letter of
the law that is the “United States Constitution.”
President
Ronald Reagan...the greatest modern day president in my opinion...
knew this as well as he knew exactly what was needed to be done to allow for much needed “bipartisanship” to overcome the numerous political hurdles then in place...the very same thing both Democrats
and Republicans now seem unable or unwilling to do. And Reagan did so
courtesy of not only his
directly addressing the issues facing the nation, but that he did so
while refusing to give sway to any and all overtly partisan driven
shenanigans. In
fact, Reagan willingly and constructively worked together with what
was then a Democratic controlled Congress to pass both his version of
comprehensive immigration and tax reforms, along with what he deemed
to be a “supply-side”
economic program... a program which included massive tax cuts to help
stimulate what was then a stagnant economy...thanks to his
predecessor Jimmy Carter...thus he was able to increase revenues from
taxes while income levels grew.
Reagan
also proposed and got through what was a “bipartisan”
Congress large increases in military expenditures as well as cuts in
“discretionary”
spending on social and welfare programs...showing that the issues he
faced and remedied back then are some of the very same problems that
need addressing today in regards to those who willingly and knowingly
continue to misuse the welfare system.
And
Reagan accomplished all that he did courtesy of his simple
willingness to both negotiate, and then to compromise, with the Democratic
leadership. In fact, Democrat Tip
O'Neill
was
the “Speaker
of the House”
during most of Reagan's two terms as president, and yet while their
politics tended to differ they became not only lifetime friends, but
friends who were willing to put their political differences aside to
work together for the betterment of both our country and “We
the People.”
Simply, this is the very thing today's Democrats, and even some far right Republicans, are unwilling to do for “Trump Derangement Syndrome" has not just stripped away any semblance of common sense and logic that these folks once had, but in doing so their mantra has now become, “We the People”...“We the Country”...be damned.
And that is the most shameful thing of all for if this current wave of hate driven partisan shaped governance continues on, our beloved “America's 250th Birthday” might well be our last...maybe not in the physical sense per se, but in the sense of our being, as President Reagan in his “Farewell Address to the Nation,” stated, “It's the American vision of creating a new nation of free people, a country that would be a light unto the nations, and a shining city upon a hill,” that would forever be lost. Case closed.
