Despite the sticker shock many Americans are experiencing after thinking the Affordable Care Act (ACA) would lead to affordable health insurance, most of the law’s unintended consequences were predictable and therefore avoidable.

Sky-high premiums, cost-prohibitive deductibles, and the exodus of giant insurance companies from the Obamacare exchanges after losing hundreds of millions of dollars in the individual marketplace have become easy—and legitimate—targets for prognosticators now saying I told you so.

Less discussed but equally pernicious for many Americans are the unintended consequences of the ACA’s employer and individual mandates, which lawmakers ought to replace with policies that empower employers and patients.

The consequences of the ACA mandates are not like the bizarre side effects spun off of treating a patient’s main ailment with an edgy new medication. The ACA is not a pill that keeps you from balding only to give you the runs. Instead, the mandates directly undermine their main purpose, thereby working against many of the employees and individuals the law’s proponents claim they want to help.

The ACA’s employer mandate gave business owners a financial incentive to keep their number of full-time employees below 50. The mandate requires businesses with 50 or more full-time employees to provide those employees with health insurance. Moreover, the law considers any employee working at least 30 hours per week or 130 per month as full-time, departing from the traditional 40-hour threshold.

ICYMI: Black Lives Matter Blamed Capitalism For Orlando Attack

ICYMI: Black Lives Matter Blamed Capitalism For Orlando AttackDemocrats think the Orlando attack was due to access to guns, progressives whine about the role of so-called toxic masculinity, and then we have Black Lives Matter saying the shooting was due to white supremacy and capitalism. Katherine Timpf of National Review had the scoop. Here’s the BLM statement:
Homegrown terror is the product of a long history of colonialism, including state and vigilante violence. It is the product of white supremacy and capitalism, which deforms the spirit and fuels interpersonal violence. […]
To honor our dead, and fight like hell for the living, we need a new vision for safety that prioritizes human rights and does not facilitate deadly violence. We need a world that realizes that the word “terrorist” is not synonymous with Muslim, any more than “criminal” is synonymous with Black. The enemy is now and has always been the four threats of white supremacy, patriarchy, capitalism, and militarism. These forces and not Islam create terrorism. These forces, and not queerness, create homophobia. These forces unleash destruction primarily on those who are Trans, and queer, and brown and Black, and we are the first to experience its’ violence. These forces create the conditions for our dehumanization and our death, and we will hold them to account, no matter whose face they may wear.
For some of the victims, like Juan Ramon Guerrero, 22, Eric Ivan Ortiz-Rivera, 36 Peter O. Gonzalez-Cruz, 22; BLM addressed them, saying “we will not allow a false narrative of “Islamic terrorism” to be dictated by white supremacists and corporate media. We know it was bullets and bigotry that killed you.”

UK Leader David Cameron to Resign after Brexit Humiliation

LONDON (AP) — It's often said that David Cameron is a lucky politician who has seemed to coast through politics on instinct and charm during a career that has culminated in six years as British prime minister. On Thursday, his luck ran out.
In calling a referendum on Britain's membership in the European Union, Cameron made a gamble that sank his career — and set his country on a course to leave an international alliance it joined more than 40 years ago. Speaking to assembled reporters outside his Downing Street office Friday, he said he would stay on for as long as was necessary for stability's sake, but that he could not be the one to lead Britain out of Europe.

"I will do everything I can as prime minister to steady the ship over the coming weeks and months," he said, "but I do not think it would be right for me to try to be the captain that steers the country to its next destination."

Brexit was a rare but fateful miscalculation for a politician who has a reputation for thriving under pressure and astutely judging political risks.

"I think he's actually been pretty stunned by the strength of the 'leave' cause," Cameron biographer James Hanning told The Associated Press several days ahead of the referendum. "The golden rule is, never hold a referendum unless you're confident of winning it, and I think he thought that the moderate voices would prevail by some distance."

Independence Day in the UK #BREXIT WINS

brexitI have been an ardent supporter of the Brexit referendum. The results are a gorgeous surprise. The night was as much a roller-coaster as …Bush/Gore. When Nigel Farage conceded (the first time), I was deeply distressed but not surprised. So imagine my joy when the results began to turn at 2 am (UK time.) Nigel Farage conceded twice and unconceded twice. He must learn a bit from American politicians – concede at last, not at once.
