Trump to Sign Executive Orders to Withdraw From TPP, Renegotiate NAFTA
"We're going to start some negotiations having to do with NAFTA," Trump said Sunday.
Meetings had been scheduled with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto, he added.
"Anybody ever hear of NAFTA?" he said. "I ran a campaign somewhat based on NAFTA. But we're going to start renegotiating on NAFTA, on immigration, on security at the border."
As a candidate, Trump also vowed to kill the 12-country TPP, which hasn’t been enacted yet.
He will instead start individual trade negotiations with the countries in the partnership, NBC News reported.
Those who will head up the new deals include Commerce Secretary nominee Wilbur Ross, U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and the head of the White House Trade Council, Peter Navarro. Before taking office Trump said withdrawing from the TPP would be one of his first orders of business, calling the trade deal a “potential disaster for our country.”
