London police plead for calm after attack at mosque

LONDON (AP) — London police, already stretched by a series of major incidents around the capital, are putting more officers on the street to reassure the public after a driver plowed into a crowd of people leaving a mosque early Monday. One man died at the scene and 10 people were injured.

Police say a suspect was arrested immediately after the attack, which is being treated as a terrorist incident.

"Extra officers are on duty in the area to help reassure the local community," Police Commissioner Cressida Dick said. "They will be there for as long as they are needed. Communities will see additional officers patrolling across the city and at Muslim places of worship."

Police said the 48-year-old man who was driving the van has been arrested and taken to a hospital as a precaution. He was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. It was not immediately clear why no charge had been made in relation to the one death.

The attack will stretch the capacity of authorities in Britain, who have faced four attacks in recent months, together with a major fire that has killed dozens. London's Mayor Sadiq Mayor Khan, the first Muslim to serve in that position, urged the public to focus on shared values and urged the city to stand together in an unprecedented period in the capital's history.

Just ask Fred Warmbier, the father of newly-released hostage Otto Warmbier. The elder Warmbier would perhaps be more overjoyed about his son’s return if he had come back in better condition. Unfortunately, something – doctors and government officials still have not determined what – happened while Warmbier was in the custody of Kim Jong Un. Now he’s barely awake, in a state of unresponsive catatonia, and his father has some harsh words for the former president.

In a press conference following Otto’s release, Fred Warmbier said that while he is relieved to have his son back on American soil, he is outraged over the way he was treated by the North Korean government. In custody for more than 17 months, the young man returned home last week having suffered a significant degree of brain damage. But Warmbier’s criticism goes well beyond the Kim Jong Un regime; he also believes that the Obama administration should have done more – or at least let HIM do more – to secure his son’s release. Instead, he said, the administration advised him and his wife to keep a “low profile.”

The Coming Civil War

The left has been at war against America for decades. The right represents those of us who favor individual freedom and capitalism — and the left are those who want government controls and socialism.

Political violence became an essential and successful means of leftist warfare in the 60’s, the decade of destruction. The success of the violent “student rebellion” in 1964 and the so-called Free Speech Movement has set the table for the left’s warmongering and treason. It was clear from the outset that the “student revolution” violently ushered in at Berkeley in the mid-sixties would come to this. The left is evil, and they mean to destroy our way of life, our freedom and us. It took decades to norm their anti-Americanism, their hatred of freedom and individual rights, but they have reached their tipping point. And the long beaten and battered among us have had it.

The attempt to solve social problems by means of physical force is what a civilized society is established to prevent. The advocates of mass civil disobedience admit that their purpose is intimidation. A society that tolerates intimidation as a means of settling disputes—the physical intimidation of some men or groups by others—loses its moral right to exist as a social system, and its collapse does not take long to follow.

Politically, mass civil disobedience is appropriate only as a prelude to civil war—as the declaration of a total break with a country’s political institutions. (Ayn Rand)
