Fauci, Paul clash over accusations of ‘cheap politics’ regarding alleged ‘takedown’ of other scientists

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., and Dr. Anthony Fauci got into a heated exchange marked with personal attacks during a Tuesday hearing dealing with the response to COVID-19 variants.

Paul, a fierce critic of the National Institute of Allergy and Infections Diseases director, accused Fauci of playing a role in smearing doctors from Harvard, Oxford and Stanford who had positions different from his own.

“In an email exchange with Dr. [Francis] Collins, you conspire, and I quote here directly from the email, to ‘create a quick and devastating published takedown’ of three prominent epidemiologists from Harvard, Oxford and Stanford,” Paul said, referring to the recently retired National Institutes of Health director.

Paul went on to cite the email exchange, in which Collins was discussing the Great Barrington Declaration, which opposed large-scale lockdowns as a response to the pandemic in favor of “focused protection” and herd immunity. Read more and see tweets and video here.

Consumer Prices Hit High Not Seen Since 1982

Wednesday morning's release of consumer price data for December shows that costs have soared seven percent in the previous 12 months, a level of inflation not seen since 1982. The dour news from the federal government's Bureau of Labor Statistics seems to confirm predictions of inflation continuing in 2022, bringing more bad news for Americans struggling to bounce back from the Wuhan coronavirus under President Biden's economic policies.

 

A release accompanying the BLS data explained that "Increases in the indexes for shelter and for used cars and trucks were the largest contributors to the seasonally adjusted all items increase" while "The food index also contributed" as Americans see grocery prices increase.

 

BLS added that along with more expensive used vehicles, shelter, and food, "the indexes for household furnishings and operations, apparel, new vehicles, and medical care all increased in December." Read more, see tweets and video here.

Conservatives Blast What's Included for Illegal Immigrants in Newsom's Latest Budget Proposal

California Democrats appear poised to expand the state’s Medi-Cal health coverage to all low-income illegal immigrants in the state after Gov. Gavin Newsom’s latest budget proposal.

Taxpayers in the Golden State already pay for health coverage for low-income illegal immigrants 26 and younger and will cover those 50 and older this spring. The new budget proposal means, however, that all low-income immigrants would be covered starting in January 2024 at a cost of $2.2 billion per year.

"If this proposal is supported, [California will be] the first state in the country to achieve universal access to health coverage," Newsom said during a Monday press conference. "So, what does that mean? It means full-scope Medi-Cal, including long-term care, IHSS [In-Home Supportive Services], and behavioral health to all low-income Californians, regardless of immigration status."

Analysis: Two More Anti-DeSantis Narratives Bite the Dust

The attacks against Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis -- largely fueled by political fear, in my opinion -- are utterly unceasing, and often preposterous.  We've corrected the record numerous times already, and will continue to do so.  In recent days, progressives criticized DeSantis for supposedly disappearing and not showing up for work, when in fact he was working at the Capitol in Tallahassee nearly every day, and also was accompanying his wife to her cancer treatments.  Quote: "Chemotherapy is not a vacation."  White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki also lied about DeSantis' position on vaccines from the White House podium.  It's one thing to argue that DeSantis could be more proactive on that issue, and less focused on alternative treatments.  There are some fair critiques to be made.  But it's just false to pretend as though DeSantis hasn't encouraged vaccination in his state.

 

We've fact checked this smear before.  His critics previously assailed him for the various ways in which he encouraged vaccination (why's he doing it on Fox News?), prioritized the vulnerable (that's not the CDC guidance!), and made the process easy and convenient for Floridians (using the most popular chain store in the state is corrupt). ...Simply, it took a certain amount of time for the original Covid-19 strain to reach our shores, and it also took time for the Delta variant to start raising havoc here in our country as well, but Omicron reached our shores sooner rather than later and has proven itself to spread more quickly. However, that does not change the fact that in epidemiology a very steep and fast increase in the number of those infected by a virus tends to be followed by a just as fast and steep decrease in viral illness along with its symptoms tending to be less severe in nature, including seeing less hospitalizations and deaths.

 

And this is the scenario South Africa has proven, and it's the same scenario we are now seeing here in the U.S. And said scenario has changed to such a degree that health expert Dr. Ashish Jha, the Dean of the Brown University School of Public Health and former health expert at Harvard University, recently stated that public health officials should stop using previous Covid-19 case data as the central metric by which the severity of the current Covid-19 pandemic is measured, because it's no longer reliable as Omicron does appear less virulent despite its being highly contagious...
