DeSantis Sends a Warning to Looters After Hurricane Idalia
Kati Pavlich / Townhall Tipsheet

Speaking from Perry, Florida Wednesday afternoon in the aftermath of Hurricane Idalia, Republican presidential candidate and Governor Ron DeSantis warned criminals against looting and promised consequences for doing so.

"We are not gonna tolerate any looting in the aftermath," DeSantis said, noting that signs in yards that say "You loot, we shoot" should be taken seriously. "People have a right to defend their property."

"In this part of Florida, you've got a lot of advocates and proponents of the Second Amendment," he continued.

Back in Tallahassee, First Lady Casey DeSantis had a close call with the storm after a massive oak tree fell on the Governor's Mansion. Read more, see tweets and videos here.
Tropical Storm Idalia to impact North Carolina after barreling through southeastern states

Tropical Storm Idalia continued its wrath in the Southeast Thursday morning as it descended on North Carolina after pummeling across South Carolina, Georgia and Florida on Wednesday.

North Carolina authorities issued warnings ahead of the storm's anticipated arrival Thursday morning, reminding residents to avoid travel on the coast as flooding and strong winds are anticipated, FOX Weather reported.

Much of eastern North Carolina and the state's coastline remain under multiple warnings into Thursday night as Idalia is forecast to bring winds up to 55 mph, storm surge up to three feet and an average of four to 10 inches of rainfall, according to the National Hurricane Center. The southeastern part of the state is also under a tornado risk until 9 a.m...Read more, see tweets, photos, and videos here.

Hurricane Idalia makes landfall in Florida
/ NEW YORK POST

Hurricane Idalia made landfall Wednesday morning in Florida as a dangerous Category 3 hurricane, promising to unleash “life-threatening” storm surges, damaging winds, and copious amounts of rain upon millions of Sunshine State residents.

Idalia, which has strengthened significantly in the past 24 hours, had briefly been categorized as a Category 4 storm before winds tapered off at a relentless 125 mph as it made landfall at 7:45 a.m. near Keaton Beach in Taylor County.

The National Hurricane Center still cautioned, “This change in wind speed does not diminish the threat of catastrophic storm surge and damaging winds.”

The threat of storm surges spans about 200 miles of Florida’s west coast, including the state’s Big Bend area, a sparsely populated area where the peninsula merges into the Panhandle, which was expecting anywhere from 12 to 16 feet of storm surge. Read more, see photos and videos here.

NYT Op-Ed: White People Caused the Maui Fires

You knew this opinion piece would bubble up at some point. The Maui wildfires are the most devastating in a century, with over 100 people dead and hundreds more still missing. The cost of the damages has soared into the billions as recovery efforts are underway. The cause of the fire has yet to be determined, but it’s likely from damaged power lines due to the high winds that blasted the state from a hurricane off its coast.

But for some, the Maui wildfires, which have destroyed communities and shattered families, was an opportunity to bash America and blame the real culprit of these fires: white people. Now is not the time for pseudointellectual lectures about the perils of colonialism:
