This Fani Willis Interview Did Not Age Well

The Trump case in Georgia has become a soap opera, and it has nothing to do with anything the former president has done. It all centers on the alleged unethical behavior of the prosecution helmed by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis.  

Mia has been tracking this trainwreck, which could see Nathan Wade, one of her top attorneys, removed from the case over an undisclosed affair, with lavish trips financed by county dollars. Willis gave Wade’s law firm hundreds of thousands of dollars to investigate Trump. These antics have involved the state legislature, which has created a special committee to investigate Ms. Willis for corruption. The relationship has been confirmed, and the misconduct hearing yesterday was a circus. Willis was indignant as ever and given an unusual amount of slack that other judges wouldn’t have entertained.

So, Is That Why the FBI Ransacked Mar-a-Lago?

You know the story behind why the FBI raided the home of former President Donald Trump in August of 2022. It arguably was an event that helped Trump galvanize the GOP base to his side ahead of his anticipated 2024 announcement. The ransacking culminated a lengthy back-and-forth between the National Archives and Records Administration and Trump’s lawyers—federal officials still felt sensitive materials resided on location. It set off the debate about classified materials and the protocols for taking them, a Democratic Party attack line that blew up in their faces when Biden got caught for doing the same thing. The only difference is that Trump got indicted. But there was one file that the FBI might have thought was at Mar-a-Lago. It’s not confirmed, but sources told Michael Shellenberger, Matt Taibbi, and Alex Gutentag that the federal raid on Trump’s house might have been on a hunch that the Russian collusion binder was on the premises.  

 

Created by House investigators in 2019-2020, the Russian collusion binder included the many ways in which the intelligence community allegedly violated the law in surveilling Trump associates during the events of Russiagate. Read more and see Xs here.

Scoop: Hur making plans to testify to GOP panel about Biden

Special counsel Robert Hur is in final talks to publicly testify before Congress in early March about his report on President Biden's handling of classified documents, a GOP aide tells Axios.

Why it matters: House Republicans are salivating about the chance to ask Hur about Biden's fitness for office.

• Biden, his White House and his personal lawyer have been bashing Hur over his report, which cleared Biden of criminal wrongdoing but painted the president, 81, as having "diminished faculties" and a "poor memory."

Zoom in: Hur already is thinking about his testimony and has reached out to former Justice Department colleagues to potentially help him prepare, a person familiar with the matter told Axios.

• Hur, a former U.S. attorney who was a Trump appointee, has been in discussions with Sarah Isgur — the head of public affairs and a senior counselor to Trump's deputy attorney general during the Mueller investigation — to help him navigate a congressional hearing.

House Votes to Impeach DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, Finally

On Tuesday night, the House narrowly voted to impeach Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. Such a vote of 214-213, which took place thanks to House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) being back from his cancer treatment, happened one week after the House failed to do so. Mayorkas now becomes only the second cabinet member ever impeached, and the first since 1876.

Per CNN's Manu Raju, House Republicans had expressed confidence beforehand that they had the necessary votes to impeach. The vote, originally planned for 6:30, was delayed by close to an hour as the House first voted to pass a human trafficking prevention bill and then had to reconsider the motion to impeach Mayorkas. 

At one point, when the vote was tied at 213-213, Democrats could be heard shouting for order. More noise was heard when the vote came down at 214-213, as members applauded when Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) announced that the resolution to impeach Mayorkas was adopted. So, That's a New Disturbing Development in the Russian Collusion Saga

Some might have speculated this was the case long before independent journalists covered it. Michael Shellenberger, Alex Gutentag, and Matt Taibbi dropped this latest development in the Russian collusion saga: the CIA plotted with the intelligence services of foreign allies to illegally monitor at least two dozen Trump associates before the FBI’s official counterintelligence probe in the summer of 2016

The established narrative was that the FBI brass took the Steele Dossier as gospel despite knowing it was a Clinton-funded opposition research project that led to the Crossfire Hurricane operation and related surveillance of Trump campaign officials. Disgraced counterintelligence agent Peter Strzok signed off on the probe, which Special Counsel Robert Mueller later took over. Shellenberger, Gutentag, and Taibbi added this latest development, which exposes a new layer of the Russian collusion hoax.
