Portland’s socialist disaster should be a wake-up call for Zohran Mamdani, NYC voters

If the travails of a certain Left Coast city are any guide, Zohran Mamdani’s plan to paint New York red is not only bound to fail but also to alienate voters once they get a real taste of his socialist “utopia.”

The mayor-elect wants to hand out everything from frozen rents and free buses to subsidized trans surgeries even for kids. He wants the so-called 1% of wealthy New Yorkers who already pay for most of the freebies to pay even more to foot the bill.

That message won him the mayoralty, but what he left out of his pitch is what happens next. Just how much do people really like progressive government, and what happens to local economies and standards of living when lefty pols go there?

Take Oregon. The state is one of the most progressive in the country, providing a suite of social welfare benefits courtesy of super high taxes on business and a state income tax. It has in recent years embraced various methods to defund and defang the police – all stuff supported by our new mayor. Read more and see video here. 

Russian spy ship detected just miles from Hawaiian coastline prompts US Coast Guard response

Coast Guard deploys aircraft, cutter to monitor Vishnya-class intelligence vessel near Oahu

The U.S. Coast Guard announced Thursday it detected a Russian military spy vessel operating near U.S. territorial waters Oct. 29, and personnel are continuing to monitor the ship.

Officials said the Vishnya-class intelligence ship was about 15 nautical miles south of Oahu, prompting a response by the Coast Guard HC-130 Hercules from Air Station Barbers Point and the Coast Guard Cutter William Hart.

The Coast Guard responded to the Russian Federation Navy Auxiliary General Intelligence ship, Kareliya, by conducting a safe and professional overflight and transiting near the vessel, according to a news release.

Acting in accordance with international law, the Coast Guard said personnel are monitoring the vessel’s activities near U.S. territorial waters to provide maritime security for U.S. vessels operating in the area. Read more and see video here.

I knew this was going to be a nothing burger this morning—I just wanted to see this thing implode, as with any significant anti-Trump narrative manufactured by the Left. With the Democrats defeated on the Schumer shutdown, they’re back onto the Jeffrey Epstein files. Like the Russian collusion hoax, every development is one dud after another. Democrats released a trove of emails, where it’s been alleged that Trump and the late New York financier and pedophile spent hours with a victim (via Axios): 

Democrats on the House Oversight Committee released emails Wednesday, including one from 2019 in which disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein alleged that President Trump "knew about the girls."

Trump signs funding bill to end historic, 43-day government shutdown

President Trump signed a funding bill Wednesday to end the longest government shutdown in US history, hours after the House of Representatives passed legislation ending the 43-day standoff. 

“It’s an honor now to sign this incredible bill and get our country working again,” Trump said in the Oval Office, flanked by House Republican leaders as well as business and union leaders.

The president blasted “extremist” Democrats for shutting down the government, accusing them of attempting to “extort American taxpayers.” 

“This cost the country $1.5 trillion,” Trump said of the shutdown, describing it as a “little excursion” that Democrats took “purely for political reasons.”

Trump re-upped his demand for Senate Republicans to “terminate” the filibuster — so that “this would never happen again” — and called for the “massive amount” of federal funding for Obamacare to be “paid directly to the people of our country, so that they can buy their own healthcare.” Read more here.

The two 34-year-olds forged similar paths to the heights of New York City political power — cutting their teeth in antiwar and pro-Palestinian college campus activism and toiling in lefty nonprofits before making the leap into state government.

“Few have played a more central role in this movement, or in every victory we have achieved together in the Assembly, than Elle,” Mamdani gushed Monday, with Bisgaard-Church standing serenely by his side as he announced her elevation to City Hall chief of staff.

SCOTUS Extends Freeze on Ruling That Would Force Trump to Fully Fund SNAP

The Supreme Court on Tuesday extended the freeze on a federal judge's ruling that would have required the Trump administration to fully fund the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP) through the month of November. 

U.S. District Judge John McConnell of Rhode Island previously ruled that the Trump administration not only had to use the $5 billion in contingency funds available to SNAP to cover payments through November, but also had to fully fund the program, which typically costs $8.5 to $9 billion. This would have forced the White House to find an additional $4 billion in funding.

With the government shutdown ending, the judge’s ruling may no longer have any practical effect, as the continuing resolution ensures full funding for SNAP.
