US barreling toward recession, experts say, as inflation hits 40-year-high

Inflation hit a 40-year high in February, and the worst is yet to come as the U.S. economy barrels toward a recession, experts say.

The consumer price index (CPI) climbed 7.9% on an annual basis, according to data released Thursday by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Month over month, inflation rose 0.8%.

Gas jumped 6.6% in February and accounted for almost a third of price hikes. Food rose by 1%.

The February data does not include Russia’s war on Ukraine, which has accelerated the rise in gas prices. As of Thursday, the U.S. national average hit a record high of $4.35 per gallon. Geltrude & Company founder Dan Geltrude told FOX Business he thinks gas prices will hit $5 this month and that it could even go as high as $10 unless the Biden administration expands domestic oil production.

“It would not surprise me,” he said. “So until the United States decides, or this administration decides that we are going to pump more oil, it is not going to change. It’s not. Fuel costs are just going to continue to rise.” See charts and video here.

State Department Says It is Reviewing What Zelensky is Adamant Amounts to Russian War Crimes

State Department Spokesperson Ned Price indicated during a Thursday press conference that the United States has "seen very credible reports of deliberate attacks on civilians, which would, under the Geneva Conventions, constitute a war crime."

"We are and will be in the process of marrying reports with evidence from the ground," Price added. "And if we determine, if the international community determines that war crimes have been committed, that atrocities have been committed, that human rights abuses have been committed, we absolutely will hold the perpetrators accountable. Whether they sit in Moscow or whether their commanders on the ground in Ukraine."

This comes after Russians attacked a maternity ward and children's hospital in Mariupol on Wednesday, injuring 17 and killing three. A Thursday report from CNN indicated, though, that this is one of many medical facilities targeted by Russians in their attempts to control Ukraine, citing the World Health Organization...Read more, see tweet, and videos here.

Poland's Move on MiGs Pretty Much Shows That Europe Doesn't Really Trust Biden with Anything
Matt Vespa / Townhall Tipsheet

Joe Biden declared that America was back when he got elected. There was no underlying reason for the declaration other than ‘I’m a Democrat, and I’m different.’ The world ate it up. The liberals ate it up. Everyone thought the norms, which many have erroneously thought were not followed, would return. The adults were back in charge. That all fell apart in less than a year. Afghanistan showed what many of us already knew about Joe Biden and this administration. They’re appalling at foreign policy. There’s a forty-year track record of Joe Biden being utterly incorrect in this area. The Afghan dash last August finally showed Europe that this guy really isn’t some ace on international affairs. His diminished mental capacity also doesn’t help.

In the aftermath of the Kabul catastrophe, Europe would obviously remain our ally, but these nations had contingency plans for when this administration became a ‘deer in the headlights' again. We might be seeing that with Ukraine. Russia has launched a full-blown invasion. Now, we have signed off on arms packages that are flowing into the nation, but it’s the steps after the initial arms packages are delivered that seem to be posing trouble.

Dems in Disarray Are Calling Their Retreat 'Cursed'
Katie Pavlich / Townhall Tipsheet

It's no secret Democrats are having a hard time keeping the party together and ongoing disarray has been on display for everyone to see.

Last week squad member Rashida Tlaib gave a response to President Joe Biden's State of the Union address. During her remarks, she blasted who she perceives as moderate members of the party unwilling to get onboard with Biden's failed Build Back Better agenda.

Yesterday and late into the night, House Democrats were forced to drop $15 billion in new and unnecessary Wuhan coronavirus "relief funding" in order to pass a government funding bill. Despite having a majority in the House, Speaker Nancy Pelosi blamed Republicans.

"As you know, the Administration has requested that we include in our omnibus package additional funding to continue our battle against COVID.  The funding requested will protect against potential new variants and help vaccinate the world," Pelosi wrote in a letter to colleagues Wednesday afternoon. Live updates: Zelenskyy: Thousands being evacuated from Kyiv
The Associated Press / AP

The latest developments on the Russia-Ukraine war:

KYIV, UKRAINE — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says efforts are under way to evacuate some 18,000 people from the capital Kyiv and embattled towns near it.

He said Wednesday the efforts are part of broader evacuation attempts by multiple humanitarian corridors within Ukraine, and warned Russian forces against violating cease-fire promises.

He appealed again for foreign air support, saying “send us planes.” Western powers have sent military equipment and beefed up forces on Ukraine’s eastern flank, but have been wary of providing air support and getting drawn into a direct war with Russia.

He also issued an appeal, unusually in Russian, to urge Russian soldiers to leave.

“Our resistance for almost two weeks has shown you that we will not surrender, because this is our home. It is our families and children. We will fight until we can win back our land,” he said. “You can still save yourselves if you just go home.” Read more, see photos, and video here.
