The US fired the attack after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps were allegedly setting up another wave of underwater mines in the Strait of Hormuz, Axios reported.
“Earlier today U.S. forces struck two Iranian launchers on Larak Island,” a US official told the outlet. “Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces were observed preparing to launch rockets with sea mines into Strait of Hormuz.“
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps confirmed the attack that reportedly killed and wounded several people, but did not provide further details.
The attack “will be answered by the sons of Iran and will result in the punishment of the aggressor,” the IRGC told state broadcasters.
Iran launched a subsequent attack at US forces stationed in Jordan, Fox News’ chief foreign correspondent Trey Yingst reported, citing American sources familiar with the operation.
Nearly all incoming missiles fired by the Islamic state were intercepted with little to no impact on the ground, according to Yingst.
The US has previously targeted military sites on the island, which lies near the heart of the Strait of Hormuz, over the regime’s ongoing attacks on commercial vessels during the war.
The attack came just days after US Central Command completed clearing the Strait of Hormuz of Iran’s sea mines, according to the Trump administration.
President Trump has repeatedly claimed that the strait, which oversees the transport of 20% of the world’s oil supply, has been cleared.
The president gave his latest warning to Iran on Tuesday, vowing that any ship or boat caught placing new mines in the waterway would be “immediately and systematically destroyed.”
Traffic along the Strait of Hormuz remains a fraction of its pre-war flow, with another tanker struck by a projectile on Sunday, according to the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO).
The tanker was struck near the coast of Oman, where dozens of ships have been sneaking through weekly under US protection. See photos here.
