North Korean hackers recently targeted U.S. power companies with spearphishing attacks in an effort to get access to their computer systems, NBC News reported Tuesday.
According to the report, hackers sent an email invitation to a fake fundraiser. If an employee downloaded the attachment he or she also would infect the company's computer system with malware designed to harm it.
"This is a signal that North Korea is a player in the cyber-intrusion field and it is growing in its ability to hurt us," C. Frank Figliuzzi, former FBI chief of counterintelligence, told NBC.
The news comes as tensions between the United States and North Korea have escalated as U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un have traded barbs — and threats of possible military action.
