A Major Question About Hamas' October 7 Attack Has Been Answered
Matt Vespa / Townhall Tipsheet

They’re fighting a war, so while this is a crucial question, it’s more on the periphery. Yet, with Israeli troops now in the Gaza Strip, having invaded on October 28 and splitting the region in two, some outlets have circled back to something that was brought up days after Hamas’ brutal October 7 attacks that butchered at least 1,200 Israelis: how did Jerusalem miss this?

With the hostage-based ceasefire in effect for a few days—it’s now ended—there was some time to come back to this as there was a pause in the fighting. New documents were made available to some publications, like The New York Times, which has yet to be forgiven for its fake news take about the Gaza hospital bombing. However, their recent story about how Israel missed the attack is one that you probably already knew: the Jewish state didn’t believe Hamas could pull it off. It’s been regarded as Israel’s worst intelligence failure since the Yom Kippur War, an apt comparison, though it’s looking more like how we missed the 9/11 attacks.

Red vs Blue State Debate highlights: Top 5 moments from the DeSantis, Newsom slugfest

The Fox News debate between Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis had several tense moments as the two governors clashed over policies related to abortion, crime, taxes and COVID-19.

The first-of-its-kind showdown hosted by Fox News' Sean Hannity put a spotlight on various areas of disagreement between Newsom and DeSantis. The two governors have sought to tackle key issues facing their states with divergent approaches.

Here are five of the most memorable moments from the debate.

1. DeSantis confronts Newsom with sexually-explicit children's book

During an exchange about Florida's laws prohibiting certain sexually-explicit books in schools, DeSantis defended his actions by showing Newsom images of one of the books banned. Read more here.

Fighting in Gaza resumes as Israel-Hamas ceasefire ends after 7 days
Ben Sales / JTA / Jewish Telegraphic Agency

(JTA) — The war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza has restarted after a weeklong ceasefire ended at 7 a.m. local time, with Hamas firing rockets into Israel and Israel resuming its military campaign to dismantle the terror group.

The truce, which began on Friday, Nov. 24, saw Hamas release more than 100 of the hostages it held, nearly all of them women and children, in exchange for a pause in the fighting and the release of Palestinian security prisoners. Originally set to last four days, it was extended through international mediation. But efforts to continue the truce fell short as Hamas did not provide Israel with a list of 10 hostages it would have released Friday in return for one more day of quiet.

“Upon the resumption of fighting, we emphasize: The Government of Israel is committed to achieving the goals of the war: Releasing the hostages, eliminating Hamas and ensuring that Gaza never again constitutes a threat to the residents of Israel,” read a statement Friday morning from the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office.

Henry Kissinger, American diplomat and Nobel winner, dead at 100
Reuters

Henry Kissinger, a diplomatic powerhouse whose roles as a national security adviser and secretary of state under two presidents left an indelible mark on U.S. foreign policy and earned him a controversial Nobel Peace Prize, died on Wednesday at age 100.

Kissinger died at his home in Connecticut, according to a statement from his geopolitical consulting firm, Kissinger Associates Inc. No mention was made of the circumstances.

It said he would be interred at a private family service, to be followed at a later date by a public memorial service in New York City.

Kissinger had been active late in life, attending meetings in the White House, publishing a book on leadership styles, and testifying before a Senate committee about the nuclear threat posed by North Korea. In July 2023 he made a surprise visit to Beijing to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping.

During the 1970s in the midst of the Cold War, he had a hand in many of the epoch-changing global events of the decade while serving as national security adviser and secretary of state under Republican President Richard Nixon.

As Israel and Hamas Agree to Extend Ceasefire, We Have Reports of a Terror Attack in Jerusalem
Matt Vespa / Townhall Tipsheet

I’m not so sure I agree with this decision by Israel, but whatever the case, the ceasefire was extended by one day as fighting was about to resume. It’s a testament to Israel’s resolve in securing the release of more hostages taken during the brutal October 7 attacks perpetrated by Hamas.

The Jewish state is abiding by the terms of the ceasefire, while Hamas has continuously violated it, launching rockets into Israel. There are also reports trickling in of a terror attack that just occurred in Jerusalem. Two gunmen were killed. For now, here’s what’s happening with the state of this pause in the Gaza War. We were hours away from hostilities resuming (via WaPo):

"Israel and Hamas have agreed to extend the pause in fighting in Gaza for another day, according to mediator Qatar. Hamas freed 16 hostages and Israel released 30 imprisoned Palestinians on Wednesday. Israeli officials have maintained that any continuation will be only to allow more hostages to be exchanged for prisoners and will not lead to a more permanent cease-fire. Ahead of the Thursday...Read more and  see Xs and video here.
